Sorry to go off topic for a moment, but what a sweet mill that Kawi liquid 440 was in the 70's. I assume you are talking about the sight glass on the side of the engine. Great idea to keep those gears bathed in oil which also provided the outside crankshaft bearing plenty of oil.I thought the sight glass was easy to see but if you have to worry about it falling out what good is it? I had a sight glass on all my Kawasaki sleds back in the late 70's and there was never an issue with it falling out.

when we first rebuilt my sled from the crash,i was at my cat dealer for cat gears, and bought my first bottle of chaincase fluid from cat dealer, and guess what,i got the right amount, the first time, but this time for the track change I just went to the local Yamaha dealer,so that's why I got the wrong amount 8oz,not happy, but it could always be worse. The fall after season 1 on my winder I went to my dealer 30 minutes away to get chaincase fluid. They too said here's what you need and handed me an 8oz bottle of fluid. I wasn't too happy when I was 4oz short! I now buy a 15oz bottle of Cat synthetic fluid from my local cat dealer.

Yep it was a gear case sight glass but I think it was in front of the engine. It's been so long but I think it held oil for the oil pump gear and others. They never had issues with those falling out of the engine.Sorry to go off topic for a moment, but what a sweet mill that Kawi liquid 440 was in the 70's. Yep! Me too. I was out on the lake yesterday, doing 60mph and sled goes into neutral. Not the belt, just a hole where the sight glass was. Waited 5 minutes started it and it was back in gear. Rode 5 miles home at 20 mph. Pulled it apart no oil and sight glass was on the bottle of the inner case intact. Fortunately there was no damage to anything. It doesn’t look like there is any sealant used to hold the glass in, just a press fit. I have used JB clear epoxy on both sides and pressed it back in
To an earlier post there is no way a boot is going to knock it into the case. It is recessed and a boot couldn’t get to it.
Dan mentioned maybe a first year thing. My second season with it. 1500 miles.
It is unbelievable Yamaha hasn’t recalled these sleds. Nobody is safe with these. They have to be sealed in on both sides and not with silicone or similarl sealants. If you haven’t done this, you are living on borrowed time. It will fall in It is inevitable. A few miles at speed without oil and your season will be over early.
Also checked roller screws while in there and they were semi tight. Both had locktight on them. But could have been tighter.
This was on an 18 le ltx
