I thought the sight glass was easy to see but if you have to worry about it falling out what good is it? I had a sight glass on all my Kawasaki sleds back in the late 70's and there was never an issue with it falling out.See Pete...if you had looked at build thread, takes 2 seconds to see the amt needed is 12oz.
My glass is great for seeing the level instantly, and my eyes aint what they used to be..haha

My friends xtx with 370 miles lost his glass. Mechanic and dealership said there was no adhesive on it at all. Seems little in quality control where these sleds are being assembled. Sad state of manufacturing today.

I am glad you listed the amount, but how come the dealers don't know how much oil it takes, and why would a Yamaha dealer only stock a small 8 oz bottle, now that you say what the amount really should be,i remember buying a bottle from a cat dealership, when we rebuilt the sled in 2017,and it was a much larger bottle. Well now I will have to add more oil, what a pain in the #*$&@ these winders are.See Pete...if you had looked at build thread, takes 2 seconds to see the amt needed is 12oz.

Apex, Vector, Venture, etc. all took 8 oz and they haven't bothered to change to acommodate the Cat chaincase. Makes you wonder about Yamaha's commitment to sleds.

Yes,thankyou, that was my point, when we did the rebuild, after my crash,i just happened to go to one of our cat dealerships near me,and they had the larger bottle that filled it up to the correct amount. I just did not even think about it,until we added the 8 oz and it was hard to see the level, because it was not where it should have been. But dealers who don't just sell one type of snowmobile, cat, poo, yamaha,or ski-doo,they should pay a little more closely to there customers needs.Apex, Vector, Venture, etc. all took 8 oz and they haven't bothered to change to acommodate the Cat chaincase. Makes you wonder about Yamaha's commitment to sleds.

Happened to my 18 on my first ride our last year. Had to walk home - wasn't impressed. Which I had taken a picture of my Dad's John Deere 7330 towing it up the field and down the road. lol
IMO, I don't think it was installed all the way in from the factory.

That's what i did! Never had problems, but better be safe than sorryOr maybe run a small bead of JB weld to the outside circumference
Oil resistant epoxy inside

The fall after season 1 on my winder I went to my dealer 30 minutes away to get chaincase fluid. They too said here's what you need and handed me an 8oz bottle of fluid. I wasn't too happy when I was 4oz short! I now buy a 15oz bottle of Cat synthetic fluid from my local cat dealer.

I've had my chaincase off twice now in the first 1700km on my '17 (once for the first oil change and once again yesterday to re-seal the leaking oil tank) When it was off both times I tried pushing in on the sight glass and it's not budging. If it falls in I would be surprised and hope it doesn't happen.
P.S. I got the same thing from the dealer I went to, 1 x bottle of 8oz, idiots!!!

I have a 19 SIDEWINDER LTX DX approximately 800 miles. Out for a ride in Canada on Monday and was returning to hotel , when chain started jumping when trying to accelerate. After dropping off at dealer in Canada, he found that the sight glass in bottom of chain case cover fell out. Destroying chain, sprocket, bearing and chain case cover. Around 1200 Canadian to fix. Warranty is covered in USA, NOT in Canada. Have to get reimbursed by my US dealer. Excellent dealer in Canada, taking excellent care of me. Gregoire Sports in Joliette. He says this is third one he has seen with this problem. I don’t know how you could prevent this problem yourself .
