2017 Sidewinder. So I ordered , from Hurricane Performance ,a new 86 link chain for my stock 21/41 chain case as I only had 1 thread left on my adjuster.
Installed it and I only gained 2 more threads on the adjuster??? WTF…
Dave at Hurricane doesn’t know what the problem is. He just told me what the centre to centre distance should be between the top and bottom sprockets. 10.160 inches which mine is.
Any thought anyone?

Upper gear bushing shot??
Maybe the adjuster mounting post is badly worn?
Are you the original owner?
Sounds to me that someone has shortened the adjuster bolt for ease of adjustment which I have done in the past on various sleds when using a different gear ratio with a tighter chain or just simply for better bolt clearance with muffler ect.

Although I have only owned the sled 3 years, I know the original owner very well as we ride together and he assures me no components were replaced in the chain case. He is just a trail cruiser mostly northern Quebec and not much of a throttle jockey. He Just did regular oil changes and chain tightening. It has just under 20,000 km on it now. The top sprocket fits on the shaft absolutely perfect. Zero play whatsoever ever. I have inspected all the gears using a magnifying glass and I see no evidence of wear , chipped teeth etc whatsoever. I was going to put a new top gear in , while I have apart this week,or at least the new bushing but a techy friend of mine said why bother …. That top gear is perfect. I’m sure there has to be some microscopic wear on the two gears because of the mileage but there can’t be that much to loose about an 1 - 1/2 inches on the adjuster bolt. I can tell the adjuster bolt is still original as the end where it contacts the adjuster still has the rounded machined end on it. Not cut off and reground. Plus it looks to be the same length as all the ones I’ve seen on Ty4 and YouTube videos.
Still shaking my head.

As per slimjim2525 comment about the plastic skate compared to the steel roller, any one else have any thoughts on that! There is a piece of me that thinks he may be on to something.
If you are going to change the top gear just install a 22 tooth gear and that will take up some chain slack.
I ran the original roller chain adjuster for a few seasons and now have the PFI skate adjuster and I have not had any negative experience with either one.

I was considering doing that slideshowbob but my techy friend who has the same sled did that to his and didn’t like the results. Where we ride is mostly tight twisty bush trails and he felt he lost a lot of midrange acceleration so he switched back to the 21 tooth.

Dog leg looks pretty normal for that gear/chain combination. Should be good to go!

Here is my chain on my 18 when it had 2800 miles on it, new. EFI skate did not do this.

Is it just me or does that spacer between the jamb nut and the gasket on the bolt look awfully thick?

It does a little bit, I didn't even think mine had one. I went out and check mine, steel washer and a whole #*$&@ pile of threads. Is it just me or does that spacer between the jamb nut and the gasket on the bolt look awfully thick?
Looks like you have a 2017 MTX...It does a little bit, I didn't even think mine had one. I went out and check mine, steel washer and a whole #*$&@ pile of threads.

If my memory serves me well [lol questionable nowadays] your sled was geared stock at 21/49 that would require a 90 link chain so the chain slack and adjuster position would be dissimilar then 21/41 gears with a 86 link chain.
I run Scott Taylor gears 26/45 gears with a 90 link chain and my adjuster bolt was even further out then your pic as there is very little dog leg in the chain for the adjuster to take up therefore I shortened my adjuster bolt so it stuck out less.
