So after a long trail ride and on the last leg towards home. My 2014 ltx-dx 137 with 7100 miles made a sudden noise resembling change in the dryer and track locked up at 45mph. There was oil pouring from the chaincase. We knew the chain had piled into the bottom. We towed it to a road and got it to the dealer.
The quote for all the parts and updates is over $2300 with labor tax i am going good to be nearly $3000. They said there is nothing salvageable and that I should replace both the drive axle and Jackshaft. (Included in quote) What the hell does this seem reasonable? I am diligent checking tension. Always check oil level before riding. Know there was oil because it was bleeding all over the trail. No warning just Crack and metal noises and lockup. I am way out of warranty and yamaha canada said there is nothing they can do.
Makes me sick to spend this much. Anyone else had a similar experience. Does the cost seem right? Looking for feedback to help ease the sticker shock

Thanks in advance

I just bought the middle chain case due to my tabs being broken. And judging by that price, yes that seems like a believable quote. Guessing they had every part of the chain case, oil tank and both shafts for that amount..

I replaced the top gear with 6000 km, it was showing wear. These gears wear and should be checked yearly and replaced if needed. A lot of people on this site replace them. If this gear goes it can take out your chain case , drive axle and Jackshaft. I was told about this on this site and when I checked my gear needed to be replaced.

OK. I was surprised by the cost, but from what I understand is that everything between the clutches and track will be new. I have never had a chaincase let go before. I don't have a lot invested in the sled so I am fixing it. With this repair I will have into it about the same a retail used dealer viper. I am not heartbroke and I will know exactly what I have. Theyt are going through everything. I will report back what else they find with a 7000mile sled that has only had regular maintenence

Yes every piece between clutches and track

Seems like the time to upgrade to the 2016 jackshaft and bearings......might even consider going all the way to the 2017 hardware since you already have to change the case.

I told them to make sure everything was upgraded in that quote. They are putting in the newest items in the parts catalog. 16 or 17......for that money it is the least they could do.

Sure would like to see pics of this. Have never seen everything destroyed.
I will ask for pics from the dealer.....I had to drop it off and get back home to work....I will know more about the cause tomorrow when I speak to the tech.

And thats why racing guys always use cat 800 jackshaft in the 1100 turbo ;)!

What kind of wear marks are you looking for on the gears to determine there is too much?
MS

I pulled my chaincase at 8000 kms and it all looked good...replaced all the bearings and seals anyway. I feel proper tension is a huge factor..to tight or to loose is a killer on these. I also would likely never just wait 7100 miles without taking the chaincase apart. Bearings wear and fail its the way it is, i dont feel 7100 miles on a 20 dollar bearing is all that bad personally
