Most likely upper chain case bearing failed. Two rows of ball bearings. If they go through the chain bad things happen. Mine failed at 5k but I caught it before it totally failed it's a common weak point.

I've heard a lot about the wear in the top gear bushing had my case apart at 2500mi for inspection and it showed wear at that time had it apart at a little over 5k to replace bearings and saw no change in the amount of wear now have over 7500mi and still no problems. Shifts better now than when new imo the small amount of wear in that bushing is no reason for concern I'll run mine until it's a problemI replaced the top gear with 6000 km, it was showing wear. These gears wear and should be checked yearly and replaced if needed. A lot of people on this site replace them. If this gear goes it can take out your chain case , drive axle and Jackshaft. I was told about this on this site and when I checked my gear needed to be replaced.
Good to know. Was never willing to risk that chance myself.I've heard a lot about the wear in the top gear bushing had my case apart at 2500mi for inspection and it showed wear at that time had it apart at a little over 5k to replace bearings and saw no change in the amount of wear now have over 7500mi and still no problems. Dealer M & M powersports has been great to deal with this, but yamaha is not holding up to their end of the $250.00 for the TRIP reimbursement for the rental sled etc as stated per the YES contract and receipts where submitted. Dealer is trying to get to the bottom of it with Yamaha. Anybody elase ever have issues getting reimburesement from yamaha?

Overall no, but I think the people administering the contracts are told to say NO the first time. But I have been taken care of after the dealer went to bat for me.

There not expensive my dealer didn't have one in stock. If it gives you peace of mind by all means replace it. Can't hurt but I have noticed mine does shift into reverse better with it "worn out" than when it was new.Good to know. Was never willing to risk that chance myself.

My chaincase was making nasty sounds at end of the season last year. Took it to dealer for repair. They said my top bearing was junk and could have let loose at any time. Glad I got it in when I did. They upgraded my 2014 to the new drive shaft and bearings. Good to go for now.

Like Cannon stated, if the color has changed it's more than likely out of spec. Measure it and see. With tolerances this tight and a gear that isn't internally splined, not worth the $2k on a replacement chain case on a $50 gear to change it out. Mine was at 2615 miles, it had changed colors and felt sloppy on the jack shaft compared to the new gear.
I feel like I lucked out.

OK so here is the update. I needed some other items looked after and was close to needing a new track etc. So I am letting the dealer keep the sled and leaving with a 2017 ltx of the showroom floor. It is ready to go for my 3 day trip this weekend I will miss nothing of the short season. Bye bye 2014 it was good while it lasted. Hello 2017 I love warranty.
