Lots I learned with my setup and where I ride and also fuel. When thinking about flasher vs just the cluster flash or even just a single flash, it really depends exactly what you want from your sled.
First and foremost for me, was having a 4s turbo that would snap like a 2s. My initial dive into the 998 turbo resulted in a terrible setup for my tight trails, it had NO snap, lots of lag and simply felt heavy due to the lack of response.
FF to the Hurricane early spool tune, and clutched to a point where it became an animal corner to corner and became a light 'feeling' sled with the ability to snap the nose/skis up on every knoll. This was when I started loving these turbos.
For this fun corner to corner monster, I needed to run the 270 map at 9/9100rpm(on top). This made that map an animal corner to corner with instant snap. So you might think, why do I need to change anything then? Well, this is where I wanted my cake and eat it too.
When running that hot setup on my tight trails with a huge grin, you ultimately come to a lake, or maybe you head up to Qc onto their super highway trails. Now you want to be revving closer to 8700/8800 and for me, i want to run 87 gas that I can get anywhere touring around areas where premium may not be avail. Also, you dont want a knock light to come on which tends to happens when revving 270 map at 9100 alot sooner(WOT holds).
So with the flash to pass handlebar button....I can instantly swap down to 240, revving 8600/8700 and cruise those big super highways for hundreds of miles on 87 octane without a knock light. But if you come into a slower tighter section, can swap up to the snappy as hell 270 map for huge ski lifting smiles.
If you live in any type of tight trail area like Muskoka, the handlebar button is used so often it's a 'must have' IMO. And therefore you must have the flasher too. Sure you could tap the cluster to swap maps which is easy enough, but that button is just slick and right there.
Others have already mentioned the other benefits of the flasher(Data logging, Code clearing, Map upgrades, BT to smartphone ect) so it is well worth the couple hundred dollar increase over and above the cost of the cluster flash. Also its worth it to ask Dave during the fall sale(Toronto sled show) if he can throw in the cluster flash, which is sorta not needed when you have the flasher and handlebar button, but if you don't have the handlebar button it makes for easy map swap via cluster buttons.
Really hard to beat this setup, having a sled with 270++ HP and running it on 87 much of the time cruising when you want(as long as you are smart and watching your knock light), I see guys going from winders over to the baby turbo doo. That sled tuned to 195 is not even in same realm as these 998s setups. Not too mention the huge 'elephant in the room'- iTC.

I like that motto !Understand and mostly agree. Looking at my dyno sheet, I'm clutched for max HP (88-8900 RPM), then if RPM were say 1000 lower, I'd be giving up about 20 HP (at 7800). Where I ride, fortunately we don't have to worry about fuel mileage or octane level. Everyone has 91+ and the stops are close enough that no one worries about getting low or running out. So, our motto is "he who burns the most fuel is having the most fun!" LOL. More WOT = more giggles!

For the guys with 2019 or 2020 998's you don't need flash to pass to switch tunes on the fly!!
The stock handlebar gauge button is used to switch tunes
Just a heads up

Interesting...I have not heard this. So the new switch gear on 19s and newer can be used to change the maps if you have a cluster flash? That is slick.
Does it work with one press or do you need to toggle things a few times like changing the shocks sometimes it needs a couple toggles, which sorta makes it a pain.

I've been having the same debate. 1 tune vs the bundle. I think I'm going to just get Max16 and be done with it. I thought about going with powertrail, but then there is a good chance I will always wonder what MS16 feels like.
I'm not interested in a different muffler, so I might as well go with the biggest SM tune and be done with it.
We always have access to 91 fuel and I will carry octane booster if for some reason we can't get it.

I never got to play with the new 19 and up switch gear. But the one i saw a video of it seemed that you needed to go into the mode first, then change setting. So it was not just one press. It works the same as the flash to pass its switches maps instantly
But you are saying its just one press of a button and it scrolls through the maps, like the handlebar button? Someone should post a video showing this like I did with my GAP handlebar button, I dont think most guys know this is out there for 19 and up, I had no idea. Very cool.

Dan on mine (no electronic shocks) I do not need to toggle. It may be different for guys with electronic shocks?I never got to play with the new 19 and up switch gear. On mine the handlebar button is reprogrammed not to toggle the gauge it controls my tunes only
There is probably a way to toggle my gauge with the handlebar button but I never tried(maybe hold down button?)
My button is used exclusively to switch tunes that's all it does when I press it

I just went and played with the 2019 gauge toggle switch . The handlebar switch is a rocker switch. Press it to the left and it switches tune press the right side and it changes the cluster display
