Rather than just drop in anyones clutch kit and run it,I would need to adjust for many variables for best performance. One being not every sled will run its fastest at 10,500 rpms for 1000 ft.Now run 1-2 miles and you may be way ahead of a sled you were tied with at 1000ft.
I believe Turk posted last season that under HIS conditions HE and HIS test sled did best in short drags running at 10,100 ish. This does not mean I will if I have the same setup and sled model.Turk always says his setups will get you CLOSE.You have to zero in on the setup that works for YOUR SLED under YOUR conditions and distance.
Running top end radar runs or short runs you may have better results at different top rpms than someone else. For short runs (RX-1/Warrior)I`ve seen anything from 9900-105000 rpms and for top end radar it was run between 10,400rpm and the rev limiter.
He said run this,so and so said run that.Test, test and test again to find what you and your sled like and runs best for 600-1000ft(whatever) and for top end radar.
The Heavy hitters and Supertips are great for adjustability.Things change alot when you add or subtract weight here or there.
Doesn`t mean stock clutching is bad.Yamaha seems to have it about perfect on my GT.But there may be more performance to be had.I just don`t like doing the rivet thing anymore.
Someone hundreds of miles away setting up our clutching is only getting us very, very, very close to the best set up for our sled. They have done the hard work of testing for us.Thank you Allen.
With Allens kit I would expect to make only a very small adjustment(if any) to my sleds clutching after its broken in because MY sled, run in MY conditions may perform best with a little different setup.

Congratulations to Yamaha for doing such a great job in clutching from factory.
I just bolted in a set of Heavy Hitter weights and secondary spring and my sled picked up alittle on bottom end in comparison to another stock gt. However by the seat of the pants, it's hard to tell any differance.

My only real beef with the clutching, is that it's typically factory style lazy. Sure, works everywhere, but if you mash it out of the hole, youll get a little hesitation. I see the theory behind the changes in Ulmers kit, and I like it.

I have yet to run side by side with a stock sled but I can say that my sled is a whle lot more fun to ride with Ulmers kit. It comes to life quicker and sure does feel a bunch stronger from the middle on up.

I know a guy you could do some side by side testing with TT!

Would like to see Allens input on this. I have ordered a stage 2 kit from him for my attak. Curious to hear what he has to say.

My sled has 208 miles on it now. I seems to have really opened up the last 50 miles or so! It is starting to resemble the Proto that I rode in the spring.
I am going to try a roller secondary this year instead of playing with the primary.
There have to be some advantages.

Most of the clutch kits out there have some time invested in them, and probably work well. I guess the point is that you should not just assume it is perfect for you or your riding style,..and a few hours spent dialing it in is usually worthwhile to get it to suit you the best

A good clutch kit should work well regardless of what conditions you are riding in... Otherwise what is the purpose of modifiying the sled!(who wants to tune it all the time)
I hope everyone has a safe and fun CHRISTMAS!!

Get a simple GPS to test. I've got a Garmin Forerunner 201 ($100) I use when i run. You can set it up to record split times at any distance. Set it for 1/4 mile splits, strap it to the handlebars hit start and punch the throttle. After the run the data will show: times, top speed, ave speed for each 1/4 mile and the total run.

Maybe every one is doing this but make sure you wash your belt with warm soapy water and give it at least 20 mi of easy riding to break in or it can glaze. A glezed belt will likley perform worse ( belt slip) with more agressive clutching, I know it is hard to stay out of the power for that long but i have seen this before and done it my self. I wonder if this is what is hapening when some sled's are running several hundred RPM more or less WOT shift RPM. Just a thought. kviper

This is too subjective to draw any conclusions...
1- Quote- One sled, same conditions, more track spin with the cluch kit----no difference in acceleration...sounds all too familiar. I question the test, not the clutch parts.
2- Quote- Johns kit puts 10 sled lengths on a stocker, even while still "breaking in" and adjusting for break-in. Sounds like a couple (two of the best) of drag racers testing under "controlled conditions", ie TRACTION and CORRECT CHASSIS !
Familiar again.\
3- Quote- Congratulations to Yamaha for clutching the sled so well. Frankly, if John is putting 10 lenghts on a stocker with clutch parts, Yamaha did a lousy job again for drag racers but judging from the praise I hear for the sleds in general, right out of the box, it sounds pretty good for the trail.
Let the sleds get 2k miles on them, remember where they are being used...I assume most of you are fast trail guys anyway and then go clutch the sleds for the trail.
The clutch parts that run the best ETs in a straight line will likely suck on the trail anyway.
If you want to be fastest in a drag race, call John or Mike and buy the clutch parts...but get the chassis and traction info and ask them where they tested, on ice, grass, frozen grass with a dusting of snow or on a snow covered lake or field...this all makes a big difference!
I bet Allens clutch parts work fine on the trial and based on the "track spin comment" the sleds probably a blast to ride with Allens parts in the clutches and watch out on hard pack with traction.

I feel this is all about conditions and not real world conditions. But, I would like to hear about some more testing on these clutch kits or head to head competitions of different ones.
The stock clutching is typical factory. Moderate upshift rate, that will carry you threw the heaviest wet snow, work ok in all conditions. The holeshot has a slight hesitation as it loads the motor too hard initially, and unless the motor is fully broken in, or on perfect conditions, the motor won't pull max revs. The Ulmer kit corrects all of this, no hesitation out of the hole, hard upshift and max rs over a wider range of conditions. Me likey mine.
