Convince me why I should rob a bank to get a 4 stroke.....

I am going to spring order a new sled this year and they are all expensive, not just 4 strokes. For anyting I want they all start at 11k or more such as a nytro xtx, renegade 4tec or polaris assault switchback. But I do agree that the trend of more cost per year is driving people away from the sport. There has to be new machines people buy before there are used machines to buy, call me master of the obvious!

Why are they so much more money?
RESALE value and RELIABILITY. Plain and simple
Yamaha dont push out the number of sleds Ski DOO and Arcic Cat do. GO to a Arcic Cat dealer and they have still have new 08's 09's 10's models sitting around. You will not need to spend money on motor failures with yamaha. Save another year and take a small laon out. Your monthly payment will be minimal and you wll have an awesome machine that works and holds it value well. You want the 4 stroke trust me. THe ride and motor are much better. Good Luck!!

The answer I'm looking for is to the question: Why are they so much more $$$ where it’s no longer space age technology anymore? :o|

CF cast frame = high $$
5 valve heads DOHC, complex electronics = high $$
Electronic instrument cluster = high $$
A arm suspension more money then trailing arm
Improved ergos = more $$
Suspensions that actually work compared to a SRX = high $$
Improved fit and finish over 2 strokes = high $$
More cooling needed for 4 stroke (radiator, etc) = high $$
Amazing shocks on almost all lines compared to doo = high $$
Exhaust systems made out of titanium = high $$

Just some reasons your not just buying a srx body with a 4 stroke in it your buying a entire new sled that has soooo much more features on it that people are willing to pay for.

You need to look past the engine and look at the entire sled and if it isn't in the budget I praise you for not overspending, buy a 2 stroke and enjoy. Snowmobiling is snowmobiling I would still ride anything just to go.

If you just rob a bank once, you won't get caught...it's the repeat offenders that get caught. It's just hard to do it once though.

4 Stroke Yamahas are alot like divorce. They are expensive becasue they are WORTH it!! Plain and simple.

Hey Redlinesrule, maybe you could detail your $2500 budget to all who have responded. For example, is the $2500 the amount you can spend on the sled, or is it the amount you are budgeting for the sled, AND all the incidentals you will need to ensure trail readiness? If you buy a $4500 2003 RX1 for example, it will be reliable as is (if you find an honest seller). If you find a $2500 2002 SRX, you will be remiss by taking it on the trail without spending time and money, checking/correcting; pistons/rings, reeds, crank seals, power valves and power valve cables, etc.

One responder actually addressed the scenario that if your budget is fixed and not easily augmented, then snowmobiling is probably not your next thing because it IS EXPENSIVE.

Respectfully Always,

Jim from Canton (AKA "Lou")

If you are looking into a low budget 4 stroke consider the phazer. Sure its not as fast as the Apex or RX1 or the big 4 strokes but you still get the Yamaha reliability and it is one heck of a fun sled to ride. just check out this post and you will know what i mean...

Dealer I go to has a new 09 PZ for $5,999.00 cheap money....

Thanks for all the great responses, info, & opinions. I will always be on the lookout for a 4-stroke Yamaha that will fit the bill. Thanks again for all those who left some positive info regarding these sleds as this is definitely the best forum for any 4-stroke Yamaha information.....thanks again!

I don't know red ... tonight was my first time riding a 4stroke sled. Gotta say it's pretty sweet. This one feels a lot more refined than any 2 stroke I've ever ridden. Still if it meant giving up the farm :dunno: . I think the most important thing is to get out there riding. Heck I've had a lot of fun on a '72 Starcraft with a 20 horse Kohler. They can all put a smile on your face. Good luck with your decision.

price

you missed a couple important points fst is the 700 is OLD!!!!!! your talking what a 2000?? VS a 2005 and up 4 stroke in 5 more years the 4stroke will be less. Your also talking trailing arm VS A arm

Look at a Ski don't Legend VS a REV chassis the REV is worth wy more even the same year.

just keep your eyes open.

brother found a 2004 rxwar ltd for $3000.00 with 19700km on it. rear skid needed bushings and bearings and track was marginal from pullthroughs. i think $4000.00 is not bad for a used rx as if i did not have a spare track, that is what it would have cost him. he has been loving it all season and loves ribbing his doo buddies on how much they spend on gas. his last run, doos $100.00 in gas and him $50.00 for the same distance riding just as hard as they do.

Yamaha RX-1. 7th Winter over ten thousand aggressive miles with a 280lb. rider. Would have had more but had FX Nytro for three seasons sharing the mileage. I doubt the DOOs et al would have held up over the same time period. Convinced?
