Starting with a nice 03 engine what does it cost to build a trail turbo engine?
Millenium strip, hone, and replate is $520
Low CR pistons like JE 9-1 are $699
ARP 10mm head studs or factory?
Minor head work and valve job?
Rods are not needed for less then 300 hp right?
What other parts would you need? All new bearings, maybe oil pump while your in there, etc? What do you guys spend to get the engine turbo worthy for say 10-12 psi on 91. Thanks

I would do rods over 270hp
but 10-12 psi, I would not do rod for sure.

IMO don't skimp and buy the rods when going through all that trouble. Once you get 12 psi on pump trust me you will eventually want to crank up the boost. So if you are already tearing it apart I would strongly consider putting them in your budget Unfortunetly those are those are the most expensive part of the build. I looked around at multiple rods, even having Pauter build me some custum ones, but I kept comming back to Carillos. They just work and have the best rod bolts. And a lot of rod failures are from the rod bolts.
I always replace the oil pump for good measure, rod/crank bearings and all necessary gaskets. Arp studs vs stock studs is debatable.

I agree with ZROSS1,I really have to recommend the rods also.you don't need them at that boost level but boost is addictive.You'll want alittle more after awhile.Anyway,we stock JE pistons and the price is right as well as the Carrillo rods are in stock for a good price.We also have the head studs in stock.If cash is alittle tight,spend it on the rods and leave the head alone if it is in good shape

OK....my two pennies. Remember I have no experience with the turbo sled stuff. But have been drag racing from the time I could walk.
Skip the head go with rods. I dont know how many times I have run with stock rods and every friggen time I thought about it. I mean I would be worrying about rods not what I was doing. No joke either. Besides you can always pull the head off within a few hours and have it sent out. Pulling the entire motor down to change rods later would be a process.

First we have to determine if your starting with a hurt motor or a good motor
Your looking to run 12 psi boost max on 91 octane 9.0:1 compression requires 88 octane which leave you a nice margin of safety.
235 hp is what you could expect.
Your looking to trail ride this and the occasional blast when you come to a lake.
Fuel mileage is a concern
Throttle response is a concern
Reliability is a concern
Yamaha has given us and incredible foundation to build on.
If the engine runs perfect and is not hurt you could just change out the pistons, gaskets and call it a day.
Now I am a bigger fan of Compression, and lower boost for all of the above concerns.
10 psi boost and 10.0:1 compression will give 10 less peak HP 225.00 but much better over all Torque curve and better fuel economy and response, requires 90 octane so still has a safety margin.
Don't forget all the gaskets, seals, and orings on your build.
To get to 10.0:1 you can just Shim and set cam timing on a good running motor and leave the factory Forged pistons.

ted i know you like to keep compression stock at 11.8:1 is there any advantage to go to 13:1 pistons plus boost if with have the proper fuel.

Thanks guys, so basically you need to stuff around $2600 into a engine for it to be considered 'built' for a good trail sled, no race mod 400hp foowey for me just want to ride all day and be first across the lake everytime

There arent to many 400hp trail riders out there, that is some serious power, its funny how we all talk these huge #s when in fact 260hp set-up properly will scare the poop out of anyone.

i thought my sled was fast when it was stock then i put nitrous on and said this is sick.then i bought a turbo sled set at 10lbs and said this is just stupid.now i'm going to 18-20lbs can't wait.i just can't imagine what 500 plus feels like and now dave is shooting for 700hp.when will it end? i want to be the guy with the 1000hp rx1
