It was suggested to me to start a new thread. I guess I started to hijack another. I'm trying to figure out what the cost is to have a lake racer like some of you guys here. I am looking for realistic figures. I have not picked a sled yet but am getting ready. I would only want to do this once. Anybody got good suggestions on where to start with a project like this? What would be the most reliable parts to start gathering? Help a wanabe out so I dont spend my money foolishly.

Tons of great guys on here, Lakeracer, BlueByYou2000, Ted, just to name a few!

Skydog

Figure on an RX1, then a turbo kit, track, drivers, gauges etc...

It depends on how well you shop around I guess and what deals you find, and well how far you want to take it.

$4500 for a sled
$5000 for a turbo kit
$300 ish in clutching
$400 for a wideband
$50 for a boost gauge
$600 for a track
$300 for studs
Suspension???
Skis???
Electronic boost control or manual boost control
MSD ignition with 2 stage?

Lots of options
I would say you can do it for 12k keeping it on the basic end.

heres how mine went : 07 apex rtx demo $7200, MPI stage 2 $5800, 2K powersports pistons, knife rods, falicon crank ,headbolts etc. installed $3100, Clutching including Team secondary $750, studs $300, AFR gauge $350, other gauges $300, misc $250, band-aids for your knuckles $20, and race gas $5.30 a gallon. going to local radar run and winning $4.00 plastic trophy priceless!

I guess we should define lake Racer.
You could get into a fun turbo sled for around 10-15K if you do most of the work yourself.

This takes a lot of knowledge and experience and tuning.

A Real Lake Racer Ice 660 Ft. that will be competitive will be more like 20-30K Again depending on your ability.

I am Just putting the finishing touches on the Second Pro stock Lake Racer for 08 and hope to be testing this Thursday.

This one could be the first Real full Body OEM chassis to go in the 4's.

Ted.

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess I am looking to build a sled that runs on the weekends against the local guys. I want to beat some of the big bore triple cat guys. I think they are in the 300hp range. Can this be done for 10-12G'S? I want to build myself because I like a challenge and looking for a new project. I don't want to buy someone else's headaches. What kind of weight are we looking at for a full body sled with turbo? What kind of boost to make 300hp?

Ok. You wont build a 300 HP sled for 10-12gs. Id be very surprised if those Cat guys you speak of are a true 300 HP. Thats ALOT of power. You can get to 300 easily, but to do so, you will need to decompress the motor which costs money. The ideal way is to install low compression pistons. The cheaper way is to stack head gaskets. If you are going to build a 300 HP sled, I start with a front mount Turbo, like a Simons CPR kit. Then depending on model (RX-1 or Apex), have him send the GT28 turbo and larger intercooler (for RX-1 only, Apex cooler is large enough) and decompress the motor by installing some new pistons. My guess is, if you truely need 300 HP, you will be spending another couple grand from my first estimate. I would budget $15,000 for your project.

Ted glad to hear your steping it up... cant wait to see it.. but I had a OEM chassis last year that went in the 4s so it wouldnt be the first as you stated..
it was cat chassis though..

yamaha oem chassis ;)! cat chassis yarkkkkkkkk!
hahahaha its my opinion!

Ok, So now if I have that 300hp yamaha how much boost would that be and how reliable? Can I expect more that 1 season or should I expect to change pistons, rods crank ect each year?

I think he can get over 300 hp on a stock motor on 116.

312 H.P. on 19lbs of boost using a MPI super charger. I have 2300 miles on it now. Have all bugs chased out. LOve the quickness and pull of those 312 clydesdales . there is a difference between work horses and show ponies.

Yes, I agree he can by stacking head gaskets.
