Well you can't buy a new yammy from a US sled dealer, becasue they are not allowed to sell to canadians
But you can by them second hand, and i think it might still be worth it, you still might save a bit but maybe not with all the hassel.

Not much of a hassel from what I understand. Pay the tax and you are good to go. I will meet you at the border if you would like my 06 Apex GT. 2500 miles with 144 studs.

no hassel at all. drive over, buy it, pay the tax and a $209 processing at the border and your done.

Quite a few threads on this topic so I suggest you search for the previous posts. Depending on the dealer, you may need a U.S. address just to register the sled. Price is better but no warrenty in Canada.

if you really want to save money...use a buddies USA address and register in NY.....then the sled remains an american sled, and you dont pay anything in canada....works best if US buddy brings sled over to canada(says hes going riding up north) then gives you the sled, and its then registered in NY every season thru buddy.
My bud did this with me(i live in NY) and hes canuk....works great, saved him about 4 grand on a 06 GT....i think the difference for 08 models is less..as yammie priced them closer now...but still money can be saved.
PM me,for my AWESOME DEALER in NY(near buffalo)...these guys are amazing price and top notch.

just buy one in the us. all you have to pay is the tax and a $209 processing fee. its not that much. my dad bought his rage in ny this fall and if i would have known how much cheaper it was down there my apex would have came from there to.

If you buy it new from the dealer do you pay both the Canadian and US taxes? In Michigan it is 6% tax. Can the dealer sell it without adding the 6% tax....or can you apply for a refund of the tax once it is imported to Canada?

I looked into that, but did not find much help on it, when I bought my 2007 700 Grizzly, because I had to pay the U.S tax on the ATV, but when I bought my 06 GT, I did not pay the U.S tax. If you find a way to get your tax back, then let us know.

you ONLY pay US taxes IF its registered in USA...if your truly IMPORTING it to canada, then you pay canadian taxes only....USA sells it for EXPORT and no taxes are collected.
IMO,BY far the cheapest way to go is to register it in USA,and keep it as a USA sled...you will pay LESS tax(us=9%) with NO duty fees....the sled remains registered In usa...my bud did this and uses my address ...you could easily use anyones address or get a US address near border, many people have these.
you will literally save thousands.

Yes, but, what happens when he gets pulled over by the Police and he is by himself and the sled is not registed to him and it's registered in the U.S and he is Canadian? Also, the only way you can buy a sled from Yamaha U.S.A is that it has to be registered in U.S before it leaves the dealership. Exporting or NOT. That's the way Yamaha is trying to slow down the cross border shopping.

never had any issues with being canadian and usa registered sled....its totally legal to do....its still registered to HIM,but using a NY address, anyone can own property in USA...cops dont care about that at all....they just want to see trail permits usually....but you just say you own and ride primarily in NY...so you bought it there, and just came north to ride for a weekend.
In NY state we do not have trail permits, what we do in NY is we add extra cost to our NY registration, which goes to trail fund....anyone who rides in NY MUST have a NY reg...regaurdless of where you are from....so canadians,or anyone from other states MUST register there sled in NY to ride there...this is fact.
registering a sled in NY is what others have to do to ride in NY..so this makes it easy for buyers outside of NY...as NYS DMV makes it easy for non state sleds to be regd in ny.
the only part that is tough,is that yammie is coming down on their NY bordered dealers, and has given them warning to not sell to canadians...however,they cant say anything if they register it IN NY....
the only tough part is IF you get yanked over at border bringing sled over...being canadian license plate, they might question,if they see NY reg on sled...but many canuks OWN property in NY..so its totally legal to have a US sled and be canadian...
been doing this for yrs with sleds,I used to buy all my sleds in canada when exhange for ME was better, and I would bring it back to NY for storage ect...
If you want to save thousands, its worth the try IMO...might be abit tricky to do but it IS doable...been there done it!
anyone needs an awesome dealer in Buffalo area,PM me and Ill walk you thru it.

THE ONLY PROBLEM with a out of country sale is the dealer in the states does not get the holdback or any mfg rebates if he uses your canadian address. this drives the price up if done properly. no warranty in canada also. if purchased using same in state address as dealer then there are state tax issues. even paying a premimum price you still are going to save $1000-$1500 usd over canadian pricing.cat hunter said:How is the sled shopping in the USA this year for us CANADIANS are we still bring them across, and is it worth the hassel$$$???![]()
