So seeing I'm at work(mining camp) and have evenings with nothing to do but look at sled stuff I came across a K&N filter, aluminum piping and all the fittings to put together a CAI for way less than buying one. I'm curious as to what size piping to use, 2",2.5" or 3". Anyone know the size of the airbox outlet?

Ive got mine all designed, just waiting for my sled.
I have gone back and forth on a couple diff k&ns....and also between silicone elbow vs long tube alum turn.
My goal is to get it out further to the nose then some other kits, allowing for more air around it to get into chassie too. I dont agree at all with the huge 6" filters used in some early kits. No need for that IMO.
2.25" OD is what I was told, but I want my sled to do my own specifics measurements before I order all my parts.
There are a couple k&ns that are far cheaper then others, and I am going back and forth between an angled 20 degree and a straight flange with more taper in the filter itself. I do love the X-stream with its open end, and that would surely catch the most air creating a ram air effect, but those are about double the cost. Not sure its needed with turbo.

Yes that is open end design, but not a K&N......
there are many non k&n out there, which they say are red gauze type, likely same thing as a k&n and MUCH cheaper, but you just never know what you are getting.
I need to get sled here before I decide specifically which one Im going to order, just want to take actual measurements on my own sled first, so far I have gone off some measurements ive just got off internet. But they all seem to be close.
Here is a k&n open end.

The one thing I see with the open end vrs my closed end,is it may flow more air and may need more fuel, but I like how it may work better, does someone sell one like it,but have a taper for it? So 3" ID to fit my outlet pipe from turbo, its OD is just under 3" and can is 5" on the end that it clamps onto pipe, and 6" overall length, and what I want on end facing outside will be 3" Dia. so it is tapered.Yes that is open end design, but not a K&N......

That blue and white filter, who makes it? Is it tapered at one end?Is this what you mean by open end?

Dan, i thought you want to look & sound stock for the "sleeper" effect. Won't most people notice that air cleaner & then know you are NOT stock?

I was just scrolli
I found it on eBay. I'm curious as well if the open end flows more air. Also curious why they are not used in the kits that are offered.

Pete ive posted the link many times, you need to go thru the k&n charts, there are a ton to get whatever you needThe one thing I see with the open end vrs my closed end,is it may flow more air and may need more fuel, but I like how it may work better, does someone sell one like it,but have a taper for it? IMO the alpha is too large though, cuts off too much airflow to clutches.

Go on ebay and search RAM air filter, there are zillions. Internet is pretty cool!

I dont care about people noticing, I tell everyone what I have.Dan, i thought you want to look & sound stock for the "sleeper" effect. Won't most people notice that air cleaner & then know you are NOT stock?
I just want quiet muffler.
The CAI may not be as quiet as stock setup, but I like the air to clutches, also the added throttle response, and the more open area under hood on guard.
If I can remove all that intake crap on bottom of hood, and remove some weight, I will do that for sure too.
I love a DIY cheap mod, and if you go with NON k&n it could be as little as 30 bucks or so!

Here is the issue I run into when doing my pre-design(before I even have a sled to measure off)I was just scrolli
I found it on eBay. I'm curious as well if the open end flows more air. Also curious why they are not used in the kits that are offered.
The k&n site offers a TON of sizes, just about anything you want. Straight or tapered, also a nice 20 degree angled flange im eyeing up.
But they are pricey, and so if you start looking into other brands on ebay, you will find most or 3" flange for car intake systems, but I have found a few 2.5" flange, but they are wider overall at the base then I would like. Im giving away all my idea here but who cares.
I am not a fan of the bigger intake tube kits, they tend to block much of the air from the nose intake, that I want running down onto my clutches...
Some guys are onto it, and we think alike. After all the one reason I wanted this from get go was to get that huge stock box out of there and allow for cold air to come down into clutch bay freely.
So IMO, A smaller diameter elbow (2.375 to 2.5) would be more preferred. And then a filter with approx OD off 3.75" x 5" length, with a angled 20 degree flange to put that edge right parallel to the nose snorkel screen.
But if I wanted to do it alot cheaper, I found a decent size Ebay filter for under 15 bucks, with ram nose. Its not quite the size I want though, and k&n has exactly sizes I like. So i am waiting for sled to arrive to do specifics measuring and then orer up some parts.
Couple things to remember here, there are 2 vent hoses and some places are only worrying about 1 vent hose which I believe is a intake temp sensor. But without my sled i cannot verify anything. Also I would not run CAI without a proper TUNE.
I was going to do a nice write up when I build mine to help others do one, but with my sled arriving so late, Im sure everyone will already have their CAI done.

One other thing of note, that really made me want a CAI.
The stock intake is severely restricted! Not only is the filter inside the airbox foam(not free flowing like a k&n) but above the airbox into the hood, up to the screens where the air sucks....there are areas that are narrow and restrictive.
And when a tuner says, DO NOT RUN CAI WITHOUT A TUNE, as it becomes lean, that says it all right there.
CAI will change things i believe, in throttle response.
I made my first Cold air intake in 1984!!! It was on my brand new phazer 485cc.....Made it from old vacuum cleaner tubing ect....haha....then in 2006 I made one of the first RAM AIR intakes on my apex, and it made a huge difference on the apex.
This being a turbo, ram air is not gonna change the boost pressure or anything, but it does allow for air to be easily sucked, which will do more for throttle response.
So that is why I dont believe it matters if you have 2.25 to 2.5 to 3" OD piping in your elbow to the filter, since these filters free flow bigtime, and even a 1" tube would be much less restrictive then the stock upper intake channels from topside.

I have all the parts put together on eBay as well, being away at work I'm also waiting to get home to measure things up. Like you said many options to choose from and can be done for less than half price of the kits that are available. I'll be pulling the trigger on the flash cable and tune bundle before the sale is over so to be sure to have the CAI tunes. Here is the issue I run into when doing my pre-design(before I even have a sled to measure off)
