Drive axle bearing repacking

It’s a Snowmobile. It’s a good day when everything goes as planned. I will say 2hrs to clean and pack clutchside bearings. No way of knowing if any parts are needed till apart and inspected.

I started a caliper bearing re-pack on my 7000 in late November. The caliper and bearing came off easily. The bearing was seized solid. I could only see small remnants of grease on one side of the bearing when I pulled the seals. I was so pissed that I opened the chaincase and pulled the driveshaft right out. The top chaincase bearing was rough and growled when the shaft was spun. I pulled the jack shaft out and remove ALL the Chinese bearings and replaced them with NTN and the wobble bearing with an NSK. I pulled the seals on the NTN's only to find a small amount of grease on ONE side. What is the world coming too ? I packed them full, replaced the seals and re-assembled.

The drive shaft got a peening. The left side got a drilled and tapped plug welded into the driveshaft, outside retaining ring discarded, and a compression cap machined to squeeze the rotor hub to the bearing inner race to the inside snap ring. Should be good for a year.

So this bearing seized through the summer stored in my trailer. If I had waited and gone for a ride, the drive shaft would be destroyed. Dodged a bullet here. This left lower bearing is a required re-pack every fall before the first ride. I also averted a chaincase full of balls from the top bearing. Too bad the new sleds are not as reliable as the old design with lock collars. I had a bad feeling of this.

Well I just got finish with clean and repacking the clutch side bearings they where very dry. Glad I decided to do them. Also did all the boggie wheels and the rear try hub. Took me 4.0 hours to do it all well worth it. Thanks everyone for posting their process of doing this service.
