I tried searching for some of this (there is a bit of conflicting information). Given I just did a track swap and drained both the oil tank and chaincase, I was wondering:

1. How full is 'full' on the tank. Warmed up now I am at the top full line on the tube. If my Viper was this full, it would puke oil into the airbox and end up on the garage floor out of the steering linkage boots when I got home. Is there a similar issue on this sled where I want to be slightly less than 'full'?

2. Chaincase I have sealed the sight glass and welded the screws on the roller. Currently halfway up the glass with sled on level ground. Should I add more?

Thanks again for the help.

Regarding engine oil level I haven't heard of the problem you are describing. I fill mine up between half way to all the way between minimum and max.

For the chaincase, Yamaha says 12 ounces, but many people on here are saying to fill to the top of the sight glass and then on top of that add another 2-4 ounces.

3700 miles on mine with 12oz of oil in the chain case. Zero issues, but I agree. Some guys run 14-16oz. Not sure what the benefit is.

The paper that comes with the oil change kit says 3.2-3.6L
Go with 3.4, you should be Ok.

Chaincase 12-16 oz is ok,motor oil just fill to the line.

Also look at the oz. in bottle from Yamaha. Only 8 oz. in bottle and only partially filled. Bottle is labeled 8 oz.

That's why my sled now has 16 oz instead of the 12 oz it had from my first taking apart the chaincase, when we first did it,we had bought cat oil,and theres comes in one size 12 oz what it calls format the time we did the first rebuild,i had to buy parts from where ever I could get them back in early 2017,but last year we changed the track, and needed oil,so I went to my locak Yamaha shop, not even thinking about the size of the bottle, until we tried to fill it,and seeing how it was way to low,i found out just the amount it called for,but just bought another 8 oz bottle, and after stopping at 12 oz,i still could barley see any in the view glass,so we just added the rest, and it just brought to the top,and I ran it all last year, with no problems, that why I know first hand,12 or 16 still ok.

14-15 oz. on chaincase. I like to fill it just so you can see a thin sliver through very top of site glass. So guessing 14.

Put your sled on a stand so it’s level and run it nice and easy and watch through that site glass. It drops fast when track is engaged. Then you let off and you can watch it fill/ drain back down and go up to top of sight glass.

Good info. I will add a bit to the chaincase this weekend and maybe suck a couple of ounces out of the crankcase. Itching to get this thing out!

This is the very reason I fill to the very top of the sight glass.
Filling 1/2 way I've observed very little, to no oil, sloshing around when spinning.
Filling to the very top we can see some oil, while spinning, at the very bottom of sight glass moving around. Back off, and it fills back up.
That chain carries a lot of oil.
That's why the manual says "At Least Half Way up the Sight Glass".
I read that as saying 1/2 way is the minimum.
