2017 21 top gear WITHOUT oil hole!

I personally know alot of people who post on FB who I would not ever take advice from when it comes to ANYTHING in life, much less my Winder. LOL

Leave FB for the 14 yr old girls please.

Dan
I will disagree in one aspect and that is to get riding details for Ontario, you have to parse through all the BS posts but when you want or are looking for info on where to park or if trails are really in good shape or not or I've even seen guys machines breakdown and get help from posting on the Facebook group and guys going to help so in that aspect it's good :)

This is the place for reliable info.. TY... We dont all agree all the time but straight info and helpful tips..Facebook not so much.
Any way you want to take the post. I was just trying to show wear at 6k
It is nice to hear some good strait info, most post on here are gloom and doom the sidewinder does have some issues but so does every other snowmobile, we mostly hear from the anvil breakers that can break anything. I was worried about my gear also after reading posts so i took the chain case apart to inspect, gear looks like new 2,000 miles Klotz oil, no hole so its back together with new Klotz oil and the same stock gear.

Where did you drill the holes?
No holes. The 17’s has a top gear that does not have a oil hole through the gear. This hole allows oil to get to the bushing on the gear. The 18 I believe hAve a hole through the gear to the bushing. Some are drilling a hole themselves. If you order the 18 or newer gear it has a hole in it. Most were saying you HAD to have a gear with a hole. Likely the oil hole is better but the post is to show that the gear without is not that bad. Hope this helps.

Drilled thru the gear so its just like the new gears with holes. Used Carbide masonry bit with plenty of cooling lube (soap and water).

No Hole through bushing on my 18. Hole through gear but none through bushing? I don't know what to say about that. Many are reporting that they are having good luck and durability of the bushing without the oil holes? :dunno:

18s' came with 1 hole but wasn't drilled thru bushing....Its like Cat started the new idea, but it got screwed up and not fully implemented.

So for '19...its been reported that now there are 3 holes, and they are actually drilled fully/implemented fully.

Certainly a good thing and I will likely update mine to a 3 hole next season.

I don't see the gears without oil holes looking good. The coating is gone, same is it was on my 21 without oil holes. With 2 oil holes in my 22 that I drilled, the coating is still there just like I installed it brand new after more than double the miles. Tells me the oil holes absolutely work as designed and the reason you want oil holes.

Thats what I see anyway. I'd never install a gear into my chain case without the oil holes knowingly. Easy to drill with a carbide masonry bit if you don't have holes.

Where exactly are the holes ?? I don't have holes but coating looks good 6500 miles

Here’s my experience. Wearing out bushings ever 1200 miles on my viper (it’s the same size bushing). Oil hole or no oil hole. I was using red line shockproof gear lube, so that’s not the issue. I decided I would leave the chain looser, lightly finger tight on the adjuster then backed out one turn. Seemed way too loose to me but hey, that’s what the manufacturer recommends. I’m not re-tightening it except for half way through the season. Ive been checking the secondary backlash and it hasn’t changed much at all.
My buddy’s cat has the automatic adjuster and he was ruining bushing like crazy, went to the manual adjuster and his junk is lasting forever.
I’ll report back around the 4th of July.

So you are thinking too much tension? Possibly Yamaha specs are too tight as set up by mechanics?
