So bad gas for some reason Mid season. Have to think it was the stations supplier and not old gas sitting in stations tank. This brings up something that the big tuners are not going to like me saying. Back when tunes for Winder first started coming out it was implied that the Knock protection was not working. Well I believe it maybe doesnt work when a tune is put in but works if left stock. Now call me a Blue Glassed whatever but if Yamaha designed the fuel system on Winders I would be willing to bet its designed at a level that even the best tuners will find very difficult to duplicate. The coding involved with protection systems is HUGE and could have just one line in it that detects tune making stock protections useless or ineffective. The possibilities are endless and nobody but the engineers who built it really know what is in there and how it all works together. This is just my opinion based on my Phazer which also has knock protection. That sled will run on 87 oct almost all the time but every once in a while it will throw the knock light and power is definitly affected maybe even when light is not on. Its designed to be a seamless system and not a hinderance like all the Tuners Knock systems I have ever seen. They are very touchy and throw a light at the slightest change in conditions. Safe? Yes. I wouldnt have a Turbo without it. But Factory I would bet is much more sophisticated. Would be very interesting to get that fuel tested JetPilot.
Not saying it was Old gas sitting around as I’m sure it wasn’t but I also don’t know if it was contaminated with water, diluted with something to trip a sensor or just mess with the way these things run or what but having 2 sleds do the exact same thing at the same time and the only common denominator is where they were gassed up the night before. Who knows, maybe it wasn’t old gas but nearing the bottom of the tank and maybe the tank was sweating and condensation built up and contaminated the fuel as it’s a very popular station for sleds and most sleds use the 93 octane and it said it contained at least 10% ethanol and I know ethanol can attract moisture. I don’t know the exact reason why but it was too coincidental that they both did the same thing at the same time. I find it hard to believe that the fuel pressure or venting or whatever affected both sleds simultaneously. Not saying fuel was definitely it but it’s a cheap and easy way to test the theory by purging the system and starting over with new fuel from s different location. We were running both ethanol and non ethanol fuels for over 900 miles with no issue on much colder and nights with a lot of snow dust with no affect. This day, the temps were right around 30-32 when we started and when it started the temps were creeping into the mid to upper 30’s and snow dust was almost nonexistent. I was also leading and had clean air the whole time so the snow dust freezing something or whatever is a bunk theory at least from my experience and with temps just above freezing, the windchill was the warmest it’s seen since we first starting riding so I don’t believe for one minute something froze while riding. Maybe there are other things that are going on with the fuel systems, sensors or whatever but in my particular case, I am pretty damn sure the fuel quality had something to do with it so I will purge both sleds and re prime with fresh fuel from another source and see what happens. All I can do for now.

First time on this site and having the same issue as the first post with my new Sidewinder. Sled has just over 500 miles and is at the dealer for the service, but wanted them to look into this issue. Like some have posted, it is like hitting the kill switch and then it takes off and then "kills" and over and over until you let off the throttle. No warning lights come on or anything. Seems fine after it sits and then 10 miles later, problem shows up again. Sure does not feel like fuel, it really seems like the computer is shutting it down somehow. If you ease up on speed, no issue, but whack it and it falls on its face, and it is almost violent when it does it! It gets to bucking like a horse! I never really got on it until it had over 300 miles on it, so not sure if it would have done it before then. Hoping they find the issue.

Check wires under fuse box, some have had issues with wires rubbing on the bracket below causing short

No, it is not running hot. I have the temp gauge on the left display all the time and it is usually between 165 and 171. I just called the dealer to see what they have found but it has not been looked at yet. I am picking it up tomorrow noon and using it for 9 straight days, so I hope they get it corrected and get the 500 mile service done as promised. I dropped it off last weekend so they have had 4 days so far but have not started on it. This concerns me a little if it needs parts! From this thread, I have seen everything from the wiring, to a re-flash, to resetting the rev limiter, to throttle position sensor, to you name it going all the way back to 2017. Hopefully Yamaha has posted some sort of mechanical bulletin to give the dealer a direction to head. Thanks for the responses!

Make sure both pick ups in fuel tank are at bottom of tank and towards the back of it .

Sounds like TORS coming on. Did the sled get a handle bar riser and cable to tight or TORS is out of calibration?

The guys with tunes describe exactly same as you have but it happens to them when knock sensor is activated. Perhaps factory knock doesn’t throw the light right away like aftermarket does?First time on this site and having the same issue as the first post with my new Sidewinder. Mine does not do this at all when the knock light flashes. Sounds like a fuel issue to me.
Possibly a bad relay kicking in and out.
Well I have spoken with at least 3 guys who described the knock light coming on exactly like OP did. Almost threw them over the bars. Maybe theirs is detecting more knock than yours.Mine does not do this at all when the knock light flashes. Sounds like a fuel issue to me.

I run the Hurricane tune bundle. His knock protection pulls boost and timing back and adds fuel when knock is detected.
Don't know what the other tuners do.
Its Hurricane tunes I am talking about. I never saw it myself but like I said both guys said almost the exact same thing as the OP. Now it could be some other safety measure kicking in also or a wiring issue they really all could do same thing. Cut ignition.I run the Hurricane tune bundle. Maybe it's the other way around.
Fuel issue causing lean and bucking causing knock light to come on like it should if there is an issue with the sleds. I wouldn't blame the knock light I would look for cause.
Never blamed anything just said what happened.Maybe it's the other way around.

You are describing a fuel problem. Put a pressure gauge on it. You are running out fuel under heavy load or wide open throttle. Fuel pump or pressure regulator or not enough fuel in tank.

I wonder if one of the fuel pick ups is not attached to the bottom of the tank on mine(just a theory) on mine it always happens when I am below 1/4 tank of fuel and it always stops when I get fuel. it is like my low fuel early warning system. (just to early). I get a lean pop it reminds me of when I first put my SC on my apex and the gems controller was not reading boost and not providing enough fuel. I wonder if one of the pick ups is sucking air and causing aerated fuel or a loss of pressure not providing enough fuel to the motor and it just lean pops?
