anyone run an external (through the hood) intake on their trail sled? I’ve seen a few mountain sleds with them. I personally like the look of them and the turbo sound I’ve seen on YouTube with them. After seeing a lot of guys calling the Underhood intakes hot air intakes I’m not sure I want one of those. Planning on doing a multitune with intake over the summer for next season

There is a thread on here somewhere by dieselxtx. I love the way they sound too. I'm just not crazy about cutting a hole in my hood.

I found that thread only looks like 1 trail guy using it. Also curious if the tune needs to be any different. I would think it would suck more air and a lot colder than an under hood cai

Make sure tune you run can handle colder air, ie keep AF ratio in safe zone.

I did, worked great. Also a big fan of the sound and look.

Stock intake better on colder intake temperature, external intake hotter, search IAT above read, many tests done.

You’re talking about being hotter with a cai under the hood right? I’ve seen that discussed many times. I don’t see how a intake out the hood could be hotter

Knapp has done a lot of testing on this. I think he said the out the hood(external) is the best and coldest, but the mapping needs to be adjusted. The under hood CAI flows more but does not lower temps.Stock intake better on colder intake temperature, external intake hotter, search IAT above read, many tests done.
Personally, I have no problem with the look of external and/or cutting a hole, but this would be a bit more turbo noise than I want for big mile trail riding. But that is a matter of personal preference.

Tommcat has done a bunch of dyno testing with the external intake. There were gains to be had and cooler intake temps, but the AFR did go up.

I like the turbo noise and the look personally. Seems like lowering the temperature that much would be a huge bonus. My sled reads what I consider to be fairly hot with the stock air box. I seen 70* on a 35-40* day

Not the case with my external intake. I dropped from 70 degrees to 45 degrees just by sucking outside air. When 30 degrees outside

If you want a stock looking CAI for your trail Sidewinder ... Just go get the intake parts from the mountain sleds. They pull their intake through the dash pod.
