Remove seat, gas tank, tunnel cover over EXUP,cover over EXUP pulley (two allen head's on top of outer shield) and left side cover so you can get at the cable adjuster's by the servo motor. On the top of the EXUP body behind the pulley there is a small hole that needs to be aligned with the slot in the pulley that the cables hook in to. They tell you to use a pin or drill bit that fits the hole and you need to be able to insert the drill bit in to the hole through the slot in the pulley. If it doesn't you loosen one adjuster and tighten the other to rotate the pulley till it is in spec. The cable's should be snug but not over tight. Also do this with the key on so the servo is in operating position. You can also turn the key off, rotate the pulley and turn the key back on and it should go back to spec.

As indicated in the PM you sent me, I'll try to get that to you. Kviper is correct, however you must get into the diagnostic mode to activate the servo motor for all adjustments.

You do not have to use the diagnostics to make the adjustment! Just turning the key on sets the start position of servo. Diagnostics code 53 will varify the electronic function's but not the mechanical setting, (diagnostics 53 is a separate test) this was verified by Yamaha before I did the setting yesterday. The servo is activated as soon as you turn the key on. A quick verification that the servo is functioning is to rotate the valve with the key off then turn the key on and the servo will return to home setting, If not you have a problem. For any one with out a service manual this will get you set.

The proper steps outlined in the manual clearly specificies to check the operation of the EXUP valve by selecting the diagnosti mode "code 53" prior to any adjustment. Yes, adjustment is made mecanically by turning the valve pulley to the left (with several other adjustments necessary), but step "k" again directs you to enter the diagnostic mode to see if the adjustment was correct. It will run the valve through it's full travel to verify that the pin can be inserted into the boss after adjustment.
If it can be done with just turning the key, that's fine. I prefer to follow the exact directions in the service manual.

Not a bad idea to check but 53 only verifies the motor operation and is not necessary for adjustment. Going in to diagnostics is a bit in depth and with out a manual in front of you could get confusing. By rotating the pulley and then turning on the key you are also ensuring that the servo motor is functioning. If you have a manual and want to mes with it go for it.ecopter said:The proper steps outlined in the manual clearly specificies to check the operation of the EXUP valve by selecting the diagnosti mode "code 53" prior to any adjustment. Different reference point's on the sled but the basics are the same.

Open this link for the pages directly from the manual. The attachments are out of order.....just be aware of that.

I did a friends the other day and found it was off by about 1/2 the width of the slot on the pulley. Checked mine today and it was only off a very small amount. I also set mine with the motor running, it seemed that after I hit the throttle and the valve would move it didn't return quite the same as just turning the key on and off. Probably not off enough to make any difference but now I know it's right.
