Have a trip planned to the black hills this winter. Trying to get a jump on what I need to do to prepare.

Stock 09 Nytro 121. I assuming I need to do some clutching changes and maybe a gear change? Also bringing an 07 Phazer (wifes sled). Looking at the high altitude XTX sheet (all I could find so far). It looks like I need to drop a tooth on the small sprocket and change some rivets????? Apparently both primary and secondary springs stay the same. Maybe the xtx sheet doesnt apply here as that is a 144?

New to four strokes (and yamaha) so any help is appreciated.

Elevation range 4500-6700.

Thanks in advance

I've been out to the blackhills a couple of times now, and while I have an Apex and not a Nytro, I call tell you going from Chisago City, MN (that town like 2 miles from Lindstrom :tg: ) I didnt change a thing any single time we went out there. I watched my two buddies on 2-stroke Ski-Doos spending the first hour there with the hood up and trying to figure out clutching and jetting for out there. Meanwhile I sat watching them.

:4STroke: & FI rules

Oh, obligatory pic (crappy mobile phone camera) for proof @ trailshead lodge, SD

^ Ha. Thats exactly where we are going.

Ive heard the same thing from someone else about not doing anything. Thanks for the heads up.

You have a good time out there? I was there this summer during the sturgis ralley. Was neat seeing how they measure snow in feet and not inches. Sounds like not a huge amount of trail miles but enough. To say that I am looking foward to it is an understatement.

Leave it alone!

I live in Rapid City and my Nytro XTX is all stock. The average altitude is about 5000 ft, and the highest you'll ride is 6500 ft. I used to live near Detriot Lakes MN and when I first brought my sled out (91 Exciter 2) I did have to re-jet, but that was it. With your Nytro and Pzr, you shouldn't have to do anything. PM if you want any info on the Black Hills trails.

I would clutch it if anything I went last year with my 2010 nytro xtx and while I didn't have any problems I could tell that the performance was down a little.

We had a blast. We dont stay at Trailshead though. We stay in Deadwood for the night life, and haul the sleds somewhere up past Lead to go riding. There is plenty enough trails to keep you busy for an entire weekend. The only warning I would give is that if you like to ride well into the night, watch out for the groomers that come out around 4:30 (i think?) daily, and plan ahead for gas. Some of the smaller, single pump places close down around 5pm, and most dont have a pay at the pump option.

If you are taking the wife out there with you, I'd highly recommend heading down Spearfish Canyon and having dinner at the lodge. Try and get there early for a table with a view.

recommend you have a gps.....lots of off trail riding. Not really many on trail miles to ride

As some of the guys mentioned you can get away with riding it as is. With the broader power band of a 4-stroke the change in altitude is not going to hit it as had as a 2-stroke. So if you and the wife are going for a casual trail ride you could get away with it as is. That being said you are loosing about 3% of your HP for every 1000' you go up.....so if you want to maximize your power you are correct, some clutching is required.

Drilling out the stock weights then replacing them kinda sucks. I would suggest investing in a clutch kits with weight you can adjust. If you make it an annual trip it will make set-up easy. With the Schmidt Bros kit I have I simply remove the bolts from my weights for the mountains, then replace them for the flatlands.

As for the gearing, if you are running the same track I would not worry about it. If you are putting on a larger lug or longer track then it would be something I would do.

Sounds like a killer trip, I hope we get the snow this winter. ;)!

Went there last yr. and left 09 xtx stock and did not notice much of a difference if any. I would leave it stock if i were to go again.. Have fun!!

I live in Lead and pretty much ride every weekend when the snow is good. Don't worry about doing anything. I have always ran my Rage stock up here and that's even with carbs and it runs great. I wouldn't mess with it.
