Is anyone else concerned about the long-term durability of the Genesis 80 FI?
I really like the Phazer, but I dont know if I could be confident enough to lay down $7000 for one at this time.
The YZ 250F engine (which the Genesis 80 FI is based on) isnt exactly known for great durability. Ive been reading on ThumperTalk.com and it seems like most people on there are getting about 200 hours out of their 250Fs.
Now, while thats good durability for a MX bike, thats not acceptable for snowmobilers, IMO.
However, the YZ 250F engine turns 13,000 rpm whereas the Genesis 80 FI only turns 11,250 rpm.
Im not the most technically knowledgable person on here, so Id like to hear what the rest of you think.
Can we expect to see 10,000 miles between rebuilds out of the Genesis 80FI?
I really like the styling of the Phazer, it has plenty of power, is very light and is priced so that just about everyone can afford one, but the engine concerns me.
Im very hopefull that come next spring we will all see nothing but glowing reviews for the Phazer (20-25 mpg, reliable, good torque out of the corners) but Im concerned that there will be problems with broken valves, like on the 250Fs.

Coming from BRP's engine's, this isn't what I want to hear....although 200 hours will outlast what I get out of an 800 H.O. Rotax.

You've put this question up before and people have answered you. Theres a lot of factors that go into engine durability. I highly doubt they would throw something out there that's not going to last. Being "based" on a YZF250 isn't the same as actually being one. It's not like they just slapped two of them together and called it a day. It's an actual new snowmobile engine.

... Which apparently has more in common with YZF-R1 than YZ250F. Its been said that they said its based on YZ250F to associate it based on its USE. You won't find anyone jumping a YZF-R1 down a dirt track.

10 mph x 200 hours = 2000 miles
20 mph x 200 hours = 4000 miles
30 mph x 200 hours = 6000 miles
I think you can see where i am going with this.
I would suggest you hold it W F O for 200 hours to get the most out of your engine.

If you have concerns dont buy one and let the rest of us that do trust in yamaha to put forth a good motor do the testing for you and learn from our mistakes or good fortune. Easy enough in my mind and you save your money!

Dont worry about the motor it is a yamaha.
I dont care if it is a new motor or not it will be rock solid just like the rest of the motors they build.
there is millions of dollars of research and development done at yamaha on thier motors. Not just this motor but all the motors they build. They know what they are doing.

In October of 2002, I asked the exact same question.......can a 4-stroke motor really compete and handle the cold conditions like the 2-strokes???? Aside from the handling issues and the SH^T suspension, I was absolutley AMAZED.
One thing I learned is that....these guys (Yamaha) are into this for the long haul and they're not about to lose momentum...especially when they have climbed up from #4 to #2 position in just 3 years.
I remember a dealer went to the dealer meeting in 2003 and Yamaha said that their goal was to be #1 in sales by 2008. I am quite sure they will achieve it.
I think the Phazer is just the begining of an entire line of Phazer HP sleds. I am waiting for the 120HP+ Phazer to be released....

Where we ride 80MPH is just cruising....As long as I can buy a Phazer that breaks the 100MPH mark I will buy one.

I have a lot more faith in Yamaha than I do any other manufacturer, but even Yamaha isnt free from problems.
I wish you all the best of luck with your Phazers and if things go well, Im hoping to join you all as a Phazer owner next year.

Im planning on going to CruiserFest this February in Minocqua, WI to testride a Phazer.
I actually really like the Phazer and it sounds pretty cool from the soundclips Ive heard of it. Also, I owned an old pogo Phazer and loved it and I think its so cool that Yamaha brought the name back.
Only time will tell.

Every manufacturer has its problems. After the experience with my Dad's 1988 Exciter, my family stayed away from Yamaha sleds until my Vector last winter. The Exciter motor was in no way shape or form reliable.
I dig the Phazer and would love to own one but I'm going to need to see how it holds up for a season.

There was a problem with the 88 carbs, and it was a WEIRD problem. They were a BAD combination for the engine - they were subject to HARMONIC RESONANCE, which caused the gas to bubble out of the float bowls, which caused the engine to suck on air, and of course 2-stroke lean = burn pistons. The 87's were DEAD RELIABLE, but difficult to start if you didn't know the "trick". For that reason, they changed the carbs. When the problem was discovered, they offered free replacement float bowls that solved the problem.
