Good deal or run away?

Okay, time for an update
I had time too go take a look at the sled. I went in my diesel car too inspect it before driving all the way in my truck, just Incase it wasn't worth it. I went and inspected the snowmobile (my thourough inspection lasted more than 20 mins) overall it is in much better shape machanically than my current attak. The seller said that the guy he bought it off of said he was driving along the trail one day and stopped, he noticed there was a bunch of oil (engine oil) under the sled so he didn't start it up again or anything, just loaded her up and took it home. So as soon as the cheque goes through that I gave him (ended up 725 for the sled) I'm going too go and pick it up, Probably mid next week.

So what would you guys say the cause of the oil all coming out?
I turned the engine over by hand too see if A. It would turn over B. It made any funny rattles or clanks. And C. Too see if it had compression. It passed all three notes. At this point I'm looking at repairing it and running her! Like I said what do you guys figure?

I've heard the oil filter coming loose is a problem. But I have trouble thinking the guy would sell it over a loose filter

P.S RIP too my friend who was involved in a headon collision with another snowmobile near Southey Sask

Oil could come from a number of places, take the body panels off and look it over. Could have came from a cracked oil tank, filter seal, crank seal, rubbed through oil line or even from the airbox. I'd start with the oil tank and if it is full or somewhat full then maybe no motor damage but if its empty that may not be good.

They can blow out crank seals and loose a ton of oil as has happened to some on here. If its something like the tank or seals thats an easy fix. If all is honest and it was shutoff with no problems and than noticed the oil leak it very repairable, if he shut it off because he heard or felt something and then saw the oil it could be real bad.

But in the end I'd buy an Attack with a blown motor for that price anyday.

Sorry to hear about your friend, its always a blow to the sledding community when we loose one of ours. My condolences to you, his friends and family! May you all with time heal!

So sorry for your loss, especially while doing what he loved makes it that much harder.

The suggestions on what to look for are good. Also be sure to check the lower oil suction hose at the bottom of the tank as I have had one close to failing and splitting at the clamp. Also check the o-ring seal at the oil cooler, which is the round thing with a couple of hoses attached to it near the oil filter. The double o-ring on the oil filter is a very likely suspect.

Just curious you cut him a check and he kept the sled? Why not give him cash and haul it off? Did he have the cert of origin?

Yeah I know where he lives I'm not too worried, nowadays you can't trust the buyers cheque too go through so instead of doing cash (untraceable) we did it this way.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions on where too start trouble shooting! I checked too see if there was any oil on the dipstick but there was none, but who knows, we'll see how it turns out, either way, if I fix it up, or if I part it out, I will most likely get my money's worth out of it

Hello everyone!
I recently had a little accident and rolled my attak and broke the headlight pod, headlight cover, and windshield, so instead of paying a dealer $700 for those three things I'm attempting too fix it myself, so I got too thinking what if I could find a sled that someone was parting out, so I found a snowmobile exactly the same as my attak (06, 136) and he wants $1000 for the whole machine. How ever, he will take $800. He said he bought it off someone with the hopes of repairing it him self. The only thing that is wrong with it is the engine, he said he has never tried turning it over or anything but said the previous owner said it still ran, so I'm wondering what all of your opinions on this would be? What could be wrong with the engine? If I offer him 700 is that an okay deal? Thanks!

$700 for headlight pod, cover and windshield!! I could have hooked you up for less than half of that.

If he had the certificate of origin you'd have proof of purchase. I don't know if they do titles where your at I know we don't in AK so we always have a bill of sale written also.

I only ask because if your in the states you'd have a heck of a time recouping your funds if he vanished or backed out after he cashed your check.

Sorry to hear about your friend...that is tough.
Did the sled have a skid plate? If you graze...like a slight dent as in a minor hit that you feel...you will break off the casting legs on the sump cover and lose the oil and sieze the engine if you keep going, like I did...a minor hit...and wrecked a brand new Rx1 in 2004. Put a steel plate under that sled. That's why I'm sumpbuster...if he didn't run it til it seized, it should be ok. Mine was a NASCAR like cloud of smoke..

First thing I install on my sleds is a skid plate. Have some bad scars on them from things I've hit in rock country but my sled has not been damaged other then the skid plate!
