Houston.....We Have A Problem...03 RX1 Died On The Trail

Not really relayed, but I wanted to mention it...I had a problem when my sled wouldn't turn over, acted like a dead battery. Gave one little burp of try on the starter, then everything went dead. I started at the source, and pulled the airbox and checked the battery connections and found the positive was loose. I had never touched the battery connections myself before, so it either worked loose over time or was never properly tightened up at the dealer. Just something to keep an eye on...

I found the problem. It was the 10A fuse most forward in 4 fuses above the R foot rest. I swear I must have been blind when I looked at them on the trail where it died. Anyway, I got drug out behind a Skidoo Rev for that stupid mistake....Shlt!

fuse

That is the fuse I blew. Check the wires from the key switch. There is a connector a few inches off the switch. the chafe was on the engine side of the connector. It grounded on the steering column support. I will post the picture today.

Thanks Buckeye
I looked at all the wires up there last night. I don't know how guys are pinching wires in the steering stop, my wires are well away from there. Maybe they routed some a little differently. As far as the fuses go, I'll be picking up some 15A to replace the 10. Evidenly the 10A are too light. I don't want to be climbing a hill and have the fuse blow. There's no wire in this sled that would be damaged before blowing a 15A.

read mountainsled quit dead in it's tracks

read this article on the mountainsite, this what happened to us on boulder.anyway the sled is apart and the starter is fried we are hoping for warranty, waiting for the yamaha rep to get back to the dealership.apparently this is a very rare occurance.paparattler

Wires

TW the wires are not getting pinched. The harness after the key switch plug is routed under the U sipport chanel and chafing enough to expose a wire and short out.

The break is in the left wire above the plug.

You have to look VERY closely at the tan ignition key wire, as Buckeye mentioned, it's HARD TO NOTICE but with the steering at 'full-left-lock', the wire gets chafed (ever so slightly) RIGHT CLOSE TO THE CONNECTOR and grounds out on the frame. If you blew a 10A fuse and just replace the fuse... it may work for awhile.... until next time it grounds. It took us two hours to find the short when it happened. We repaired and rerouted the wires. 10A works just like its supposed to.

I believe so. I think there was mention of it in the Tech update manual. All you have to do is unplug the connectors and route them under the bar insteadof betweeb the bar and the shroud, which is where it gets pinched. I have a better picture of the wire which I will post.

I know this is an old post but I now have the same problem, just put in a front mount turbo and added a couple of gauges, fuel pump and a heat visor accessory. I had some problems with the turbo where I had the sled apart and when I got it back together to fire it up, no power. Found that the 10 amp ignition fuse was blown, so I replaced it and no problem, went for a ride and a few miles into it, shut it down, then when I went to fire it up, no power again, blown fuse. Put and new one in, blew immediately. Towed it home, checked it out, couldn’t find any shorts. Then we figured it may have to do with all the accessories I added, but not sure, so I tried a 15 amp fuse and so far so good. Now I’ve searched the forum and found that a few of you have had this problem as in this post and I checked my harness, and it seems OK, the ignition wires run underneath the bar and the harness is strapped to the front of the bar, I can’t really see where it would chaff. I’ll have to check it by turning the handle bars to the stoppers on both sides and see how much stress there is I guess. Have any of you guys run a heavier fuse due to multiple accessories? I figure if there is an intermittent short, that the 15 amp should blow also before the wiring gets damaged.

Well, the 15 amp fuse now blew, took a jump and it blew right after that, was coming back from work 30 miles away, by myself, luckly it blew only a mile from my house.

Kmer, I noticed in another post that this happened to you too. I will have to examine the ignition area carefully. The wire to my ignition runs underneath the bar you guys talk about and goes to the main harness. What about the main harness, mine runs over top then up to the handle bars, I notice that when I turn full left the motor revs up (throttle cable tightens up), should the main harness go underneath that bar too? Are there any pictures anywhere of how these wires should be routed?

I also took a meter reading on the fuse block to check and see if I had a dead short and found that it reads 2.7ohms, which is not a dead short, don't know what it should be, does anyone have a meter in which they could take a reading and tell me what their's reads? Thanks.

check the power lead goig to the atarter,my bodies RX-1 did this, couldnt find anything, after tapping on the battery it started, was lose going to the starter

Did you pull a spark plug to check for spark and compression? IF you have spark it is time to look elsewhere.
