Hygear Apex SE Upgrade

MrSled (Tom),

How much seat time have you had with the new valving on the Float Mega? I'm curious about the durability of the float compared to the Ohlins. (My GT... Ohlins required refreshing annually.) I am also interested in hearing your opinions comparing the mono fitted with Hygears' float to the M-20.

Thanks in advance!

Seat time was about 600mile on just that version and more with the Ulmer kit. I think the durability is really good but not as good as a normal shock...all it takes is a dent in the body of the float and she can loose her seal. I like the standard mono better then the float and and for all around riding when set up properly I still take the Mono over the M20... the M20 has many set up issues.... non of these alternate suspensions and shocks ere spot on perfect and reliable.... thats why I keep falling back to the new standard Apex mono in the 128... Yamaha hit that one on the head as far as ride comfort and control.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I recently picked up a 2011 SE and was thinking I would try it first prior to tinkering with the shock internals. I needed to send a different shock to Hygear anyway and while on the phone with them I inquired into changing the Mega. The price was reasonable and the salesman did his job so two shocks were sent off.

I'm really looking forward to riding this sled... hope the Float Mega isn't a disappointment!

Thanks again!

I really think as long as you dont add the extra air kit you will be very very happy.

Digging up an old thread here but im picking up a new 2011
Apex se today. I was wanting to
Just get the base apex but this dealer only has the se heldover. Im not a big bump rider, i slow down when the trails get pretty rough, i am more of a groomed trail rider or whatever, so i hope these fox floats are gonna be good for me. Im 185# geared up. Any rec on psi settings?

I too slow down when the trails get bad, however, you don't have to. The front floats can take what is thrown at them and if you slide as far forward as possible through the rough, you can go as quick as you care to (seated)

I have had all 3 floats improved by Hygear. They re-valved and installed their volume reducer to the Mega and I added their Dual Pressure chambers to the fronts. The SE ride is fantastic with these changes.

165 rear and 60 front? These are the floats not float 2 btw. Also i was reading that the shocks should BE removed every year to remove the shock air sleeve and to clean and relube? Do you all do this? Is it fairly easy removing all 3 shocks from the sled? Thanks!

U dont have to remove them every year. But like all wear items they will need servicing after a few years of riding just to keep the ride good depending how's my miles u ride. Just like any shock. As far as pressures if you are only 185 then you will probably be in the mid 150's for rear and upper 50's for front. Especially if you are not a hard rider. Most of us that ride hard have done the Hygear upgrades but go out and try it first and see if u like it. I also have a 06gt and if you liked the front end of that you will love the fox floats!!

Im a hard rider just not when the trails are rough and moguled out. Dealer gona set my sled at 165 rear and 70 front. Ill probably back off the front to 60 or 65. Ok thanks for info on the servicing part. I usually only get 800-1200 miles/season.

Thats strange that you say you have Floats and not Float 2's. My 2011 has Float 2's on the front.

You are right
My 2011
Does have float 2. Dealer tried to stiff me on an air pump but i wasnt about to let that happen. Thanks for the input.
