I had a '05 REV SDI that I rode for 3 seasons and 5200 miles without a problem, but I liked the idea of a rider-forward, performance oriented 4-stroke. Within a couple of weeks after Yamaha announced the release of the FX Nytro, I had one on order.
I used to think the smell of two-stroke oil was the smell of winter and fun, now I just think it stinks.

I used to be one of those guys that said the two stoke smell was what made snowmobiling. I would say I would never own a 4 stroke. Then a buddy of mine bought an 06 Apex MTX.
My old sled was an 01 800 Mountain Cat with an 03 King Cat engine. I rode that Apex of his for less than 2 miles before I decided I had to have one. I don't know how to describe the ride other than the sled just "fit" me.
So in July i ran across a brand new 2008 Apex Mtn Se at a dealer and could no longer resist the urge. Now it's sitting in the garage waiting for it's first trip to Snowy Range.

I hated yamaha my entire life, I grew up on honda quads and polaris sleds. I always said yamaha was the last sled I would ever buy and when they released the 4 strokes I thought they were gunna ruine the sport. I said there is only one engine for a snowmobile and thats a 2 stroke!!... by this time I was racing banshees so I knew how good yamahas quality was but I was not willing to leave 2 strokes. I had 14 polaris sleds over the years, finally in 2005 My current xc 700 was blown up for the 3rd time, and I was sick of dropping $1000 or more per cylinder when it blew. I decided I was going to take a complete 180, all my friends were in shock when I showed up with an RX-1. I loved it, There was nothing I had ever ridden like it. The torque was incredible, and all my poo riding buddies admitted liking it also once they gave it a chance. I converted 2 of my buddies to yammis too.
After selling my last RX-1 (turbo) last year I wanted something faster than a stock apex and I didn't want to mod a sled. I had modded so many sleds in the past and always had problems sooner or later (even the turbo was finnickey from time to time). I had my heart set on a used 06 or 07 mach z just for the two stroke speed of that 170hp motor. Then I went to doo talk and found out that the mach is a toilet. I decided that since I ride alot by myself and alot after dark many miles from civilization, I needed reliability, so I stayed with my favorite... Yamaha... I know when Im on a yamaha 40 miles from the nearest road, Im gunna make it out of the woods. I was never sure with my polaris'. I hated to ride alone because I had walked too many times...
So to answer your question, The thing I want most out of a sled is reliability... speed is a close second but reliability is first... I just wish my apex had around 180hp rather than 150, then I would be in heaven... I certainly could never ride anything with less than 150 again....

Well to start...
Every night I either fall asleep thinking about sleds and/or girls. Every night. I grew up riding the fams 86 bravo, and when it came time to get a new machine, my dad bought me an 07 phazer the first year it came out. For me back then there was no other choice other than yamaha, but now that I know more about sleds, theres just no other way to go. Yami is the only way to go. I rode my friends sabercat 500, just pure junk. Rode an indy 600, pure junk, towed it home twice. And all I hear about doo is issues. When you do your research on these forums, its amazing what you find. So my friend got fed up with my phazer smoking her sabercat, so now she has an 800 crossfire against a phazer. Thats what i'm against this year. The funniest part about it is that hers may be faster, but mine will last thousands of clicks longer and is just built with such quality. Lol. Thats the Yamaha advantage! :rules

Turn the key and ride , when my buddys on other sleds are buying gas I am having a coffee , no oil to buy either , after a long ride I get a steak dinner for free.
Dependable , ride it hard and put it away wet , runs the same ride after ride, when my buddys are wrenchin in the garage after a ride I am ejoying some goose by the fireplace.
Smooth fast and wont blow up after a to the bar ride down trail 88.
Heavy ? maybe but I dont make a habit of carrying it around on my back.
No I dont know my service managers home phone I could care less about the little things that come up on my APEX , it is head and shoulders above any any other make , hands down

Raced Yamaha off road bikes for a whole bunch of years. Always bullet proof and competitive. Just damn good. Tried an Attak in 06 and never looked back.
Got a 08 Nyto now. Sweet. To all my old buds who continue to ride another brand. All I can say is You do not know the power of the Blue side of the force.

Honestly,,,,
I went out for a ride at the end of last season on a warmer day (+2c) and no BS, we passed a rider who was with group and his engine blew, within 100 feet, one rider in our groups engine blew on his two stroke and after getting him on the trailer, another 1/2 mile down the trail, we went by another group who had a rider down whos engine blew as well on his two stroker. Three of them within a mile.. TOO FREAKY !
These were all sleds that were about 2-4 years old and were two strokers. I said near the end of the ride, this is stupid why are all these engines blowing ? I then decided that I was tired of adding oil all the time and didnt want to rebuild or repair blown engines like what I witnessed that day as my sleds were not only two years old but had almost 5000 miles on them. I wanted out of 2 strokers and was going to the Yamaha's. Notice I said Yamahas not Arctic Cats. Everyone said the AC 4 strokers were terrible.
The next day, a buddy of mine told me of a great deal on the 4 stroke Apex and he bought it. The dealer brought in 40 - 2008 APex's for $8999 (new). After testing my buddies out, i was in the day after with my cash and bought it. I sold the two Cats over the summer of this year and bought another Yamaha a month ago.
The Yamaha's fit and finish is incomparable. No 2 stroke oil is fantastic. Better mileage. Reliability I heard is much better than AC. But honestly, the best thing of it all..... This Apex is the absolutely best sounding factory sled that I have heard. I still get goosebumps thinking about riding it. It sounds so so so hot and the power,, well, we dont need to explain anymore.
Anyway.. thats my $0.02.

why I ride Yamaha
12,000mi on wifes 98 600srx, 5800mi on 97 sx, 8700mi on 2000 srx 6500mi on 2004 viper, 7000mi currently on 06 apex gt. only had to replace one track and some parts. but the twostroke yamis were cheaper to run. I love my apex after I got it set up. buying a 2010 nytro rtx se to add to the collection.

Had a falling out with my old dealer and swore I would never step foot in his business again (been 18 months). Six months later my ZR9 squeeks a piston and I decide to part it out. Buddy of mine used to work at the local yamaha dealer and he says he can get me a good price and the rest is history. Had tried a Nytro in 08 and liked the way it felt like a two stroke and the reliability thing sold me. And its easy, no more holding my breath to pull it over when it's -25. I've also owned 2 Arctic Cats 1 Polaris and 1 Ski-Doo so maybe it was Yamaha's turn...

Three years ago I was ready to replace my '99 Arctic Cat Z. I wanted electric start, reverse, and a four stroke engine. Arctic cat had the T660 but it didn't excite me. The Jag had just been released for sale but it was expensive and un-proven. Then we suddenly no longer had a local Arctic Cat dealer. Ski-Doo had a V-twin 4-stroke in a touring sled but that wasn't what I wanted and the local dealer had disappointed me one time too many. Polaris had just released their turbo 4-stroke but there was something about it that I just didn't like and I never found a Polaris dealer around here that acted like they wanted my business.
I went to the local Yamaha dealer where I had bought 2 dirt bikes, an ATV, and a road bike in the past. I had never been let down by the machines or the dealer, and I had been hearing nothing but good about Yamaha 4-strokes. They had a left over '06 Vector GT at a great price and I've never regretted the purchase. I became addicted to the torque and sound of the engine. I'm spoiled by the economy and reliability of owning it, and tend to be more enthusiastic about snowmobiling than ever before.
If it were in my budget to upgrade this year I would get a 2010 Vector LTX. Even though other brands have good 4-stroke machines, none of them measure up to Yamaha's quality or performance.
