Major Engine Failure!

The motor was not really run that long, maybe 6 times for 10-15 seconds each after it shut down.

I'd check the rod and main bearings for damage (make sure none of them spun) I'd recommend checking bearing clearance with Plastigage as long as their apart. If things look good put a new chain in it and make sure its running true on the gears. If you take this route make sure you save the parts and document everything.

Keep pressuring Yamaha but the season is way to short to wait. I'd be assessing the damage and determining what needs to be done to make it run again.

I am thinking you may be ok. Rockers would be noisy as hell with no oil pressure. It may be worth a try to put in a new chain, and start her up. Anybody know if its possible to prime the oil pump, like using a drill in the distributor shaft on an older engine?

Here is another dumb question, possible to do something with the oil pump so its turning for oil pressure and start the thing up to see how it runs? I mean, it looks like there is a small cover exposing the end of the pump.

Not sure which direction the oil pump turns. May be able to just use the bolt to get oil pressure.

Like Grizz said, it may be worth checking the main bearings. A spun bearing would be noisy as hell too.

Get ahold of Chris Reid from Yamaha. He has helped Yellowknife (member here) with his engine failier I beleive his was the timing chain. I would not let them away with it myself and would stand my ground if you are in the clear (you are right?)

Yeah I am in the clear, but that doesn't do much good without a warranty I guess.

Here is my path, and also what the stealer (dealer) said, throw the chain in it, run the piss out of it and if it blows up bring it in. So I just finished putting in the chain, slapped it back together and fired it up.

Motor has quieted down, and just went about a 10 minute thrashing and all seems well so far!!! Again I will post some pictures of all this BS soon.

Hopefully the motor will be ok and get me thru this season! I'll be PRAYING that it does.

Thanks agian guys for all of your help!!!

Good to hear its running again. I hope your dealer gave you a brake on parts. Did the new chain look like its running on the gears properly?

Glad it quieted down. I would pull that cover and check the chain in a bit to see if it is rubbing still. Or did you fix whatever was causing it?

Rode about 40 miles last night and all seems well, I just hope that this thing lives for awhile. It really is a blast to ride, I have always really liked this sled.
Last night the ditches were blowing in from the east and it was pure powder, so it was a pretty good load test on the motor.

The only thing that I did was replace the chain, I really didn't see anything wrong with the gears, maybe the crank shaft gear had a little bit of a rough edge to it, but I said screw it, lets run it.

So as long as it keeps on motoring I will be happy!

Buy an extended warranty!

So then it would be at the dealership for 3 months waiting for Yamaha to try and figure out a way to not have to warranty it. "You used to good of oil, you painted it, took of the reflectors, you ride it to hard, you .....blah..........blah .....blah............

Any excuse they can come up with, Warranty or no warranty you think that a problem like this, being that it is a uncommon ordeal that they would want to make it right, being that it has 3400 miles on it, a few months out of warranty. But bottom line is, for everything a manufacture warranties, it is profit off the top! Period!

Only thing I can say is that I am happy that I was able to get it back up and running and hope that there isn't any serious damage that will show up later down the trail. I feel that the motor wasn't hurt, being that it only ran for seconds at a time after the chain broke. If I could justify trading it in now I would, but right now I will hope that it runs the rest of the season and then next fall my snow check SKI-DOO will be in! Just kidding on that one, well maybe, that 800 XP XRS is looking pretty sweet!

Anyway thanks again everybody for your help!

Dustin
