Just got off the phone with the dealer, NO WARRANTY!!!! But listen to this, they can't even sell me a crate engine if I was wanting one. The only way I will get a motor thru Yamaha (THIS IS WITH ME PAYING FOR IT) is to box up my sled, take it to the dealer, have them contact YAMAHA and have a rep. look at it. Then it will cost me $3700 dollars plus labor to install by the dealer. I can't even buy a motor with out the dealer installing it. WTF!!! I have never seen such a F@$ked up mess.
Yes I understand that I should of bought the extended warranty, BUT WHY these are the most dependable sleds on the snow, right? But here is what really pisses me off, my dealer has warrantied a destroyed motor that had a BLOWER on it. What gives?

they can not use brand of oil as an excuse...it's illegal...
as to what I would do...I would have/now taken it in to my dealer...shown them how well I maintained it and asked them to contact yamaha customer service as an internal failure is premature..
they would have told me sorry its not covered under warranty and calmly I would let them know Im not going away...sure I'll deal with a crap handwarmer system...cheap plastic bushings that need replacement...inferior ball joints etc....but I wont pay a penny to fix an internal motor problem on a 1.5 yr old fourstroke with 3500 miles...
Id remind them I belong to a forum of thousands who read this information and they could be judged accordingly...
I did this very thing over three weeks and many very calm conversations with Yamaha customer servie on a BIG BORE SLED BUILT AT 0 MILES BY PAT HAUCK and they gave me a brand new crankshaft and some of the labor...
if in fact you truly cared for this sled and have dcoumentation their first offer will be to cover part of the costs...I believe you can get it all covered with tact and patience
good luck

Snoxracer242 said:The oil pump is not locked up and turns easy, the side plates on the chain have spots that have wore thru, looks to me like possibly one of the gears has wore thru the side plates of the chain. There is three spots on the chain where the side plates are worn. I will post pictures later of all of my findings.
If the sides of the chain links wore through there must be an alignment problem with the gears. Is there any horizontal movement in the crankshaft? Those chains normally are very dependable and last forever. Something wasn't right from the factory and it was destined to fail. I'd have that chain in their face.
keep us posted.

Stay calm, contact Yamaha and find a new dealer. I got my cam chain tensioners done with no warrenty. I believe a good dealer can do a lot. This one don't sound on the up and up.Snoxracer242 said:So far I have remained calm, and will be contacting YAMAHA corp right now!

Man this sucks. I hope you can get it straightened out. Hopefully its not a problem we all may be having at some point. And ya, don't let them play the wrong oil crap. Hopefully you kept your receipts for the oil/filters. I know when I bought my Toyota, service guy told me its fine for me to do my own oil changes, etc. Just keep records for all of it.
As for the pump. I am sure you probably checked but, was the bolt holding the gear on loose at all? My question is, where the hell was it rubbing? Did the end cover show any signs of rubbing?
Anybody know if the gears on the crank are pressed on? Something obviously came loose.
You know, if Yamaha really wants to stand by their products, these 4 stroke engines should have at least a 3 year warranty. I can understand the rest of the sled having a 1 year with the pounding it takes but that engine should last forever.
PS: by looking at the service manual, it looks like the timing chain gear is pretty close to the oil pump one. Perhaps either one of those could have come loose. Regardless, you could probably use cooking oil and it wouldn't cause a gear to come loose. Sounds to me like a factory defect for sure.

It looks as if the gear on the crank is pressed on, and the bolt was tight on the oil pump. All of the wear on the chain was on the inside of the the chain, it looks as if one of the gears has a burr or something causing excesive wear on the chain plates.
Again as soon as I get a chance to load some pictures on my computer I will get them posted.
They way it is looking YAMAHA pretty much is saying that I am f@#$ed. But I will keep on keeping on! By the time I am done, I am sure Yakatuchi will know me on a first name basis.

pull the rod bearing caps and see if any spun. Inspect the cylinder walls from the bottom and with the rods disconnected you can check for wrist pin movement. If you didn't run it for very long you may not have done that much damage. You might be able to replace the chain and run it enough to trade it. I hate to say that because some poor sole will eventually end up with it.

How long did you run it for without oil pressure do you think? Your first post sounded like not very much.
I had this same problem but it wasm't a yamaha issue it was a service issue when they replaced my water pump. Long story short I ran it about 8 times between 20-30 seconds each time with one time over a minute. When we disassembled it the head was burnt but the rings and cylinders were fine. If you ran it less then that you will probably be ok.
I would not buy a new crate motor, your motor is fine for a rebuild (although I know it takes time on the start of the season!)
Keep with the plan of contacting yamaha asking them for help, get them some pictures of the worn chain, they need to know about it and like SJ stated let them thousands are watching this thread waiting to see if Yamaha will own up to it or not (do in a non-threatening way).
Good luck my issue was painful but it was from poor service work, this would really make me skwirm.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Good luck and keep the pressure on them in as calm and professional a manor as you can.

The motor was not really run that long, maybe 6 times for 10-15 seconds each after it shut down.
