I believe 70. The full 74 was too much. I tried having switched from ms 17. Taking off weight help for me.

I'm running DTYA-1 empty which weigh 74.74g on my scale and its just a bit too heavy. So if I switch the QAY-70s this year I am going to load them to 73g as a start.

Those running the TD MS16 SM tune with QAY 70s what are you running for weight?
It really depends on what primary spring you are using because as you take weight out of your ramps the engagement will be affected, it will increase. And for your cruising and WOT rpms your secondary spring and helix combo matter.
Oh and gearing, I run the 22T.
So what is your combo?
I ran the QAY 70 from a starting position of 73.8 as I recall but could not get what I wanted so I bought the next lower level engagement Yamaha primary spring(Blue —- Blue) which allowed for a bit lower engagement and a higher WOT but a bit lower cruising speed rpm for mpg sakes. Those ramps were at 71.8 or 9. I also used a reverse angle helix 35/39 and the stock 35 during my tests. Just making a point as to what your set up will be for what you are asking. Many combos out there and you need to know what you like. I like low engagement with low cruising speed rpm, but when I go WOT I want 8950- 9000. If it touches 9050 for a few seconds during many different runs, I am ok with that.
So save yourself some trouble and buy the 2 springs Dalton recommends unless you enjoy testing of coarse.
My combo now.
22T
Stock belt
Reverse Helix 35/39
Machined primary if that matters.
Machined secondary to reduce coil bind.
All stock springs
Added washer to tip of stock weight and then ground to my desired WOT rpm which I think is 73.8 or 9. Would have to research that for exact measurement, but you get the point. Buy the Dalton springs unless you really enjoy and have lots of time to test.

How do you like the stock weights for this application? My friend uses your exact setup minus the tip weight for Powertrail Sm and loves it. He says it is very smooth with great top end and belt wear. He is afraid to try his dalton 70’s because he doesn’t want to screw up a good thing. I am running both Powertrail and MS 16Sm this year and am always looking for options. I also have the dalton 70’s and a 35/39 laying around so changing things around would be easy.It really depends on what primary spring you are using because as you take weight out of your ramps the engagement will be affected, it will increase. It does the trick for me, but I am sure if you invest in the proper Dalton springs for both clutches you will have easier and probably better from what I understand.
Not a fan of multiple tunes, I enjoy spot on clutching with my Max Spool 16, so to back it down and have a lesser rpm tune whereas my set up (Right Now) does not allow for that except maybe a lesser wrap on my secondary, would drive me crazy!!!!

I run slightly modified stock weights also. I just put software only in a customers srx a couple days ago. Changed the tip rivet to a 3.1 gram and welded some weight onto the upper rivets. Ground a little off the inner portion at the end as I don't like any weight tucked. 74.5 gram total. Has the rpm's at high 8's.How do you like the stock weights for this application? Stock gearing. I gps'd 124 mph yesterday morning.

DMC,
I'll throw in my 5 cents here.....
I've never run MS16SM, however based on the presumption that it makes 260hp, this is where I would start:
Take the 1 inch slug (4.1 grams), make sure it has loctite on it, screw it into the weight all the way till snug, then back off 1/2 turn. This should put you at 9050 on a short pull and come down to 8950 on a long pull.
Hope this helps.

So you’re running 22/41, instead of the stock 21/41?
What was to be gained by going to 22 tooth gear instead of 21? More snap on bottom? Or more on top end?

More top end, better all aroundgas milage, not any tougher on belts than 21/41 like some say,at least where dennis and I run,its not.So you’re running 22/41, instead of the stock 21/41?

No loss in bottom end..not logy out of the hole at all? I ride N. Aroostook...so big speed is able to be used. But don’t want any loss of bottom end AT ALL. Can’t stand a soft bottom end.
So it’s 22/41 instead of 21/41. Which gear is the lower number gear...the top gear? Or bottom gear?

22 is the top gear. It has 1 more tooth then the 21 for more top end.
SNOWBEAST basically rides the same area as you.
I believe FLEECER, who you've ridden with, has a 22 top gear also.

Ok that’s what I thought. I did realize that snowbeast rides in the S part of the County. If you change the top gear to 22, and keep the stock 41 bottom gear, can you use the same/stock chain?
Thanks Steve.

I first put in the 22T with my first Tune, it was TD Eco Trail. I found with stock gearing my sled would run up to 114 on speedo before falling on it’s face and thereafter, it was one or two more mph at a time. You know what I mean.
So with the same everything but a 22T instead, the same thing happened but at 117, and because My buddy and I are always testing sleds against each other’s, the gain was apparent throughout entire runs. If we were ice racers and were heavily studded, the 21T may work better down low.
I have since added the TD Max Spool 16 tune, so there is no sense going back to a 21T for me. But that is just my 2 cents, but I do agree with all Snowbeast has said pertaining. Just a better gearing, so much smoother all around too.
