This is my experiance with and review of the 07 phazer Mountain Lite. Wow I can't believe winter is almost here agian!!! Last year at this time I purchased my 07 phazer for my trail sled. I wanted a long track phazer and found a mountain lite cheap and very close to me. I live and ride in Wisconsin on groomed trails. Well to start off I bought it with just over 1000 miles and everything in excelent condition. Everything was stock and had a luggage bag that straped to the rear of the seat and I'm pretty sure 6" single carbides. Last season I got 1200 miles on it and had a blast!!! I have tinkered with it and made some improvements.
I know many people ask about these sleds as crossovers and I even asked a few before I got this sled, so I hope this helps out a little.
Handling
I am actually very impressed with the way it handles on trail. Obviously a sled with a 144 track is going to be different twisting through the woods but after you adapt to the sled it just feels natural to ride, and I really turned down my brother many times when he asked to switch off and ride his apex! Being narrow I feel makes it want to roll or just tipsy in the corners, and very few corners have I rode with both skies on the ground. The main thing when cornering is to be ready to throw your weight around and be active as you ride. I love standing as I ride and leaning into corners, so I adapted quickly to the phazer. On rough trail this thing is awsome on any sized bumps and turns a rough trail into Lots O Fun.
Suspention
I am 6' 2'' 150lbs, so tall and skinny. The suspention is WAY TO SOFT even for me, I had my spring turned to the highest of the 3 settings on the block. Front suspention could use some work to, but that handled everything I did ok. Just normal trail riding I liked how it took bumps, but then found out how fast the rear skid bottomed out. I don't know suspentions all that well, but this year I am going to take time and try to fine tune it.
Riding it
This is a COLD sled! (Being an active rider keeps you warm) I have the smaller windshield on it when it gets cold but take it off when I'm out messing around or its warm. I ride with a MX style helmet, (or the one with gogles and visor) I also got a new warm suit too. A better helmet would've solved mostly all my problems, but I rode many times at night last year in 10 below down the bike trial (Old rail road, kinda like a hwy for snowmobiles) and would stop about 15 mins, mostly to warm hands with the exhaust, but whole body would get chilled too. May try to find the knee wind deflectors for this year, and I got a new helmet with the cold weather insert thingy with a thicker head sock and new winter gogles. I ride with a mix of sleds including a phazer fx, apexes, nytro, artic cats, and a few doo revs. I never really have trouble keeping up and just drift to the end of the pack if we hit straight fields and catch up in the woods. I am happy with the power, but more power would just turn up the fun! Also I blocked off the tunnel so I have never gotten wet form that. The stock skies are good enough for me and seem to float decent on the little bit of off trail riding I have done. The phazer feels pretty tippy on and off trail, but I think by the end of the season last year I was able to pick up the ski and carve a little bit for having limited Wisconsin snow I got to work with.
Mods
First thing I did after I got it was put a block off over the rear hole in the tunnel after seeing my cousin get soaked on his phazer fx. I got Apex stock bars from my brothers Apex with the hooks, then got the full heated hooked handle bars by the end of the year. After riding I found out 2'' paddle track killed the slides instanly without fresh snow or loose trails, so I made some scratchers and mounted them to the front skis.
For this year I plan on putting knee wind deflectors on, 2'' handle bar risers, maby a 1 1/2 track, homemade anti bottom for the rear skid, 4 position spring adjuster for the rear, and maby stock width a-arms.
Problems
Unfortunately this awsome sled does and did have some minor and some major problems. First off my handwarmers have NEVER WORKED!!! I see they may have a wire kit out now, gona check with my dealer. The suspention has its issues. Big track hard on slides. And then the engine, I guess I am one of the few to have had one fail. The gear reduction gears broke and cracked the crankcase, but thankfully the original owner got the 3 year warranty and Yamaha replaced the engine with a new one free of charge! And the sled was down when we had marginal snow so I really didn't miss out on any riding.
Overview
If you plan on riding the phazer mountain as a crossover, your gona have to work a little bit more than most other sleds esspecialy when riding hard, if there is any other way to ride a phazer! But all in all I just love riding my phazer and it will take a lot to ever get me to switch to any other sled, I love how light and nimble it feels when riding. Oh and did I forget, I ditched the 2 stroke oil jugs that used to be all over the garage, lol! And I got great fuel milage, but can't remember off hand what it was exactly.
