I have seen others gut the two cross tubes out of their mufflers, but I only wanted mine just a little louder then stock so I decided to cut her open tonight and start modding, I decided to drill my two tubes with holes, close to the same position and spacing as I could. Thought I would post some pics so you guys can have some options in modding your stock mufflers. I have to go weld it back together now and try to get a sound clip for you guys in the garage and outside tomorrow for better comparison. it's not the prettiest job in the world so don't bash me for the rush job, lol

My brother in law did the gutting first by removing the main pipe. It was a little to loud and droning so he welded the pieces back in and did the swiss cheese mod! it sounds good.

I did the same thing to mine last year. Sounded great at first but it drones real bad around 5,000 to 6,000 rpm could'nt handle it anymore. So I wrapped the tubes with some light gauge stainless held them in place with hose clamps and welded where i could, then removed the hose clamps, sounds very close to stock again.

you shouldve just cut the smaller diameter perforated pipes out and left the bigger "glasspacks"intact,it will make a difference in the sound but your exhaust is still pushing through all the "little" holes before it even gets to the holes you drilled, most of the restriction is in the smaller diameter pipes

It will still be quieter than a 2 stroke with a pipe and a can on it.

I appreciate the info on not gaining anything from this mod, I have not done it, but my sled did have a pipe on it from where I bought it. As long as some one uses common sense while riding it should not be an issue as they are still quiter than most older 2 strokes and deffenatly quieter than a 2 stroke with a can etc. Please respect landowners and try to be quiet and thoughtful when going behind someones home or late at night. It is a big problem. In my opinion not as much as people riding on the wwrond side of a trail or riding on land that is not for snowmobiling and other things, but it can hurt our sport if done recklessly.

the problem is that when retards think that their sled sounds so good that they think everyone wants to here it. especially at night coming home from the bar. thats why its illegal around here to even modify exhaust.

There are NO land owners here, it's all crown land and a private town, i can ride where I want and make as much noise as I want without any problems, unlike wherever it is that you ride. and the sound is just over stock, just a little deeper, not like a 2 stroke with a fart can on there which is very annoying like you say.

NOT WORTH IT
From the video clips it sounds like...but thats just my opinion. Being a CCC member (dirtbike and ATV) from Michigan, less sound equals more ground, this couldn't be more true in this case. But some people just don't get it, and never will.

Stock is already too loud and droney. Why make it louder? I'll guarantee you it lost power too!
Edit: See in another post about your R's being low. This reduction in power could explain the low RPM's. You killed the power with this mod.

I gutted everything in the muffler and it's still not as loud as my older two strokes were. Barely louder than stock when putzing around town/gas stations. No droning and no complaints from my mother/girlfriend that have ridden with me....trust me, I'd hear it from them it was that loud.
How can people honestly complain about these sleds being too loud if they've ridden older sleds that are OBVIOUSLY louder??? I call B.S! I agree that these people should be crusading against people riding off trail, on the wrong side of trail, drunk driving, etc.
I talk to bar owners and other farmers and the biggest complaint is riding off trail, not loud sleds.
