top speed is ambiguous !If the testers are seeing 120mph in snow like the track in video the Sidewinder is going to mop up a stock 1100 Turbo cat I have no doubt about that.
The only way to really be sure is a head to head drag race across the lake !
That's the real world !

Sounds like the new 998 will push out well above 180 depending on fuel. Amsnow is claiming 195hp+ on 91 octane fuel. Sounds like they are saying 180 because if you only can get 87 octane fuel the ecu will restrain some of the hp to prevent knocking and etc. Also supposedly the new 998 is 10-14lbs lighter then the previous 1100 (just the motor itself). With that the the old m1100 turbo was 560lbs dry so the new mountain sled maybe weighing in around 545lbs with potentially 195hp+. In the article they also claimed 30% better power to weight ratio then the next leading sled in this category (poo 800 pro-r). http://www.amsnow.com/news/snowmobile-news/2016/03/2017-yamaha-snowmobiles-released

right, everyone is so hung up on the horsepower number. I've got a lot of time and money into my Viper to get it to a higher HP number than this sidewinder probably is and I bet this sidewinder will either be right there in a race or beat my Viper. And the safeguards are there to protect it from bad gas etc. theres nothing there to save my motor. From two different online magazines - yamahas hp rating is very conservative. One, I think snow tech, said its really 190. The other said it was closer to 200.
HP is not what I would be focusing on here. 50% more tq than a stock Nytro is a crazy statistic. My SC Nytro is nowhere near that and it already pulls everything hard out of the hole
Case in point for the HP numbers: The little 700 SRX that ent out and spanked a lot of bigger higher hp sleds of the day.

Sounds good. That 177hp Cat motor was a turbo band-aid. I've rode one, and the turbo lag was so bad it felt like a 130hp sled in the trails. An absolute pig. This new Yamaha motor may as well have been designed by aliens, compared to that turbo Cat engine. One of the magazines called it "almost undriveable."
For the old-timers on TY: I only wish Turk was still with us to enjoy playing with the new roller secondary & revised primary. Admittedly, I would also love for him to get it all figured out for us too! ;-)

looks like going by the Canadian website the LE models will have the RR (Race Ready) rear cat suspension with the premium shocks front and back. some where wondering if that was the case. the in season model will not have either

so is the new THUNDERCAT motor , a slightly detuned version of the SIDEWINDER motor , so that Yamaha can claim to be the HP king ?Sounds good. That 177hp Cat motor was a turbo band-aid. Weather its in a AC or a Cat, the heart it is still a YAMAHA.. they can claim it to the grave. Without a heart you have a cold body!!

Sounds like the cat is the same motor, but the yam changed their clutch design to have a higher gear ratio compared to the team clutches which will allow it to get slightly higher speeds then the cat at WOT. Arctic insider is claiming they saw 118mph so if the higher gear ratio is true, I wouldn't doubt that it will reach the 122mph claimed before.so is the new THUNDERCAT motor , a slightly detuned version of the SIDEWINDER motor , so that Yamaha can claim to be the HP king ?

Cannondale what do you mean when you say 17.5 ????Ok trying to talk myself out of buying one.
Chassis too many questions yet. Were reinforcements made? With good shocks More wieght and speed this one has the stock ProCross chassis will not take it. Hopefully RR type reinforcements added.
Engine. Are all the rods good?
Rider position. Is the bodywork allowing a little more rider forward?
Finally. Is what we are seeing now what we will get come 17.5? Very bad track record on this point.
