New 2017 Yamaha Sleds...

Lots of ways around it, the question is will Y put in a real effort to do so. There are far to many steel bolts that are unnecessary on the Apex. Time will tell wether Y is willing to be #1, or just settle with being first loser.

The ways around it are lightening up the chassis much like Ski-Doo. Ever seen torn bulkheads on the Doos? It does happen quite frequently. They tear apart rather easy. Yamaha does build in some durability in other places. I think they did lose some wt. on the new Apex skid though. There is a fine line of building them too light, especially with the bulkier 4s motor. Its like a balancing act. Its not like you could put an Apex motor in the new Poo chassis and expect it to hold up as long.

Yamaha has made sure that we are all aware that the new Singleshot suspension is 10 pounds lighter than the previous monoshock, but they never mentioned how much weight they added with the power steering (40+ pounds) nor that amazing new tech known as the PDS (another 2-3 pounds), as well as the whole EXUP system...all for an exorbitant amount of coin.

I think the 1049 needs some work also. It has gotten to the point that the new 600's are very close in power at a significantly lighter weight. And they all get better mileage than the 1049. Granted it has a big edge in lifespan, but that isn't always whet sells new sleds. And lately there have been enough problems to make some question that also.

The power steering cant be more than 5-10lbs. And when is last time you wished your car didn't have it lately? A lot is being refined and developed right under our noses. The chassis it will be attached to and front suspension might be joint effort with cat, then drop in single shot and power steering and dampners the throttle by wire deal and what motors get developed and that's your sled

I just weighed the power steering actuator that I had to replace on my Apex last year. The actuator weighs 12 pounds, but there are more components and hardware to the power steering system on the sled. It may not weigh the 40 pounds as I stated...perhaps it is the total weight of all steering components. I can't remember where I read that power steering added 40 pounds. What bugs me is Yamaha's cost to replace this unit, $1500cdn. I did find a used unit on this forum for approx $600...still expensive.

I wish Yamaha would stop incorporating "new tech", ie. EPS, EXUP, PDS, etc. in their sleds, pricing themselves out of the market. A simple, light and low tech sled with a fair price would sell like hotcakes.

I do miss that they have nothing in the small HP market and the simple machines as said like Bravo's, Enticers etc.

Well mister CR, when you read this. The change in the internal components in the triple engine was a big mistake. A engine from 2005 and when Yamaha finely was around to make some changes it was to cheaper heavier parts! And less reliable ( turbo ) !! Who in their right mind wold put a 162` x 3`track on a 125hp engine ( viper mtxLE ) ? Off course this sled was made for turbo application! And what happens next after i found out the cheap new engine wont take a turbo anymore? The prices are lowered and kills any 2 hand value totally. Thanks for nothing Yamaha.

I thought this looked familiar...
