RIP 04 Viper-S
Hello all and happy Thanksgiving!
I'm returning to the sport after a 3 year break. I've always had 2-strokes in the past. Last night I went and looked at an '04 RX-1 with just under 3,600 miles. Other than it needing a new seat, 2 tiny spots of rust on the A-arm, and part of the plastic on the shift lever is broken, the sled is mint. It has a brand new 1.25 Ripsaw w/studs, and a new battery.
I do have a few concerns, however on how it was idling.
1- When the guy started it up he was giving it full throttle w/choke. It was about 30-35 degrees outside. It took a bit to start up and didn't want to stay running. Also, the triangular "!" light was flashing the entire time the sled was running. I'm not sure if this is the TORS light, as my last sled was an '04 Viper and that light was just an orange circle. I took it for a spin and it ran fine - no bog or loss of power; was very quick. Then it still didn't want to idle and the light was still flashing.
I'm thinking the idle problem was from too much throttle w/choke at startup, dirty carbs that probably need to be synched, and the sled not being warmed-up long enough, however I'm not sure and seeking your input. I didn't feel as though 4 strokes would be so finicky at idle. And I didn't even think to check the plugs until after I got home
Also, there was some rattling from the primary that goes away with increased engine RPM, however I've read that an updated roller kit usually solves that. If not it's just the gear reduction.
I told the guy I'd get back to him. I can get this sled for $2500 tomorrow, and I would appreciate any and all input on the the ilde / light issues. Thanks in advance!

Primary rattle is normal and I would bet money that the carbs are dirty. I would use it as a bargaining tool.
Flashing light could have been low fuel or the warm up light.

Thanks for the reply. He was asking $2,850 which is a little below what similar sleds in the area are going for. I offered 2,600 originally then lowered it to 2,500 after the idle issue was discovered and he said that he would accept that.
So does the temp light just flash until the sled is at proper operating temperature?

Yes, it should be a red light, that once warmed up it will idle smoother too. Was it red or orange triangle?

OK. It was a constant flashing orange triangle. No codes that I noticed; just flashing. Fuel gauge only had 1 bar on it. Also snow was minimal here in Maine; only a couple of inches but it was pretty cold outside. I can't see the sled wanting to overheat if it hadn't even warmed up however...

Warm up light is yellow/orangeish.

Pretty sure the yellow comes on at one bar of fuel, can't remember if it flashes.

If ya ride with 1 two stroke in group you'll never get that low on fuel. HAPretty sure the yellow comes on at one bar of fuel, can't remember if it flashes.

Thanks for all of your responses, guys. I'm going to buy the sled tomorrow. I really hate cleaning carbs and have never synched a set before, however I have to say when I heard that thing rev yesterday I fell in love. I never thought a sled could sound sweeter than a piped 2-stroke triple, but I may have to eat those words now.
I'm looking into getting an Apex or Vector seat to replace the torn stock seat. Just need to find that template for cutting the tank cover...
I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday!

Carb syncing and cleaning should only be $100 at dealership. Seat change is a must.

Remove carb rack and clean properly, re-install and sync carbs for $100.
I think you will pay more than that!!!!
