Well just came back from a good groomed ride and decided to really open the viper up to see top speed on this rocket. The fastest I could get it up to was 84 miles an hour and noticed that the rpm was not going over 8400. What do I need to do to fix this. As i have read on this forum that the full shift out is at 8900 I am losing some serious rpm and horsepower that is created at the top end of this sled. Its a xtx by the way completly stock. I have checked track tensoin but that shouldnt have anything to do with rpm ... need some ideas .... Thanks
How was the trail you were on. Icy,loose. It matters alot.

The trail was well setup with about 3 inches of fresh snow. But in all my 750 miles so far I have never seen anything over 8400 rpm and I find I am watching the rpm gage more than the speedo.
I am about to give up on getting every last mph out of mine. It seems these sleds are very intolerant of anything but perfect conditions for speed. Almost like a peaky 2 stroke. I am going to clutch for near 8900 rpm and leave it there since anything less may give more top end but in any conditions that load motor it just takes the fun right out becomes sluggish and you lose speed. We all expected no more than 85-90 mph anyway. Take some weight out of the tips of the primary weights.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with top mph. I am seeing 96-98 everytime I take it out and that is on loose snow, where everybody runs slow.
Steve, you know anywhere we could do some testing? Don't give up
Ryan466 - I will be checking to see if the clutch doesn't have the shift out like you say. I changed my clutching and I am at 8,850-9,030 and gained 6mph.

Mine is the same way can't get over 85 mph but my rpm is 8800 and drops to 8500 and climbs to 8600.

I've been slowly experiencing slower and slower speeds out of mine. Got out on glare ice with 1 inch of fluff last night. Perfect conditions for top speed but only got 85. Rpm was right at 9000. Talked with my dealer who sells both yamaha and cat and he said the procross chassis is notorious for the slide rails dragging bad. He said that adding extra wheels and pulling up the limiter helps tremendously. Claimed that with an f800 in perfect conditions could only get 100 mph..went back to the shop put on new slides extra wheels and pulled up straps and it got 116. Could very well be in issue for speed there. I'll be doing this with mine this weekend and will report back. As for the other guys the lower rpm is what's killing you for sure. Get the rpm up around 8900-9000 and you'll be all set.

Barry, I adjusted my track Sunday morning and adjusted the limiter straps up 1 hole about 2 weeks ago. I also did some clutching Sunday morning and it helped BIG TIME! SHould have done one thing at a time to see where the most advantage came from.

Are you saying you think pulling the limiter strap up helped a lot? I know that after my clutch kit was installed that that did make a noticeable difference. Stock clutching was very good but after clutch kit was done the sled pulled very hard and was easily hitting 90-95 in pour soft snow consistently and nothing has changed other than added just a little weight to keep rpm from running to high. The thing that gets me is that if clutches weren't getting full outshift it would make more sense that people's rpm would be higher than what they are as it's would act as tho the sled is just geared very low. I've been saying for a long time that I'm gonna adjust the straps tighter but I just haven't done it yet because I don't want to lose any suspension travel and hurt how the sled hooks up. Maybe that's all it needs tho. Hopefully can try that this weekend and report back with info

Did you guys try drawing a line with a sharpie on the inside sheave to see if you were getting the full shiftout?

I did this with mine a few days ago. 94mph on bare grass in 800 feet and had full shift on both clutches. The speed was there but it's been slowly losing the grunt at higher speeds that I had when clutch kit was first installed and dialed in. I think what we are all experiencing is either a combination of slide rails dragging and or clutching being off. Even when my stock clutching was off I could still do 100. Now it's spot on and has been since clutch kit was installed and speeds keep getting less but still seeing full clutch shift. Maybe suspensions breaking in is causing this to happen. My dealer claimed that's how this chassis is. If that's the case it kinda stinks to be adding wheels or making more adjustments but if it's that simple it's an easy soloution

Barry, I did the limiter strap to make the skis bite more. I did this after riding on the river by my house. Conditions were flat ice with 1-2" of hardpack snow and I saw 98 (97 on GPS) with a best of 101, but couldn't repeat. Otherwise most of the speeds were 85-93.
Saturday I was on groomed trail with snow and I saw a best of 90 at 8,700. It felt very slow. Saturday night when cannondale27 showed up, we drove the sleds to go eat and on the way back, groomed trail with some tracks and getting colder. Best was 96 tucked down with a 9,030 tach recall.
Sunday, groomed trail with snow and 98 easy after the clutching change and adjusted track.

No, I did not do this yet, but am guessing I am very close if not there now.
I am going by mph, rpm and using my Nytro (son driving it) as a test racer then seeing how long it takes for the skis to come down.

If you're getting speeds in the 100mph mark you are darn close if not spot on with clutching. The guys (myself included) only getting 85..there is some issue there.

Anyone actually know how far out the speedos are in comarison to a radar gun or GPS ? Generally, they are always on the optomistic side, which makes the real numbers look even worse.
