Overheating, milky UPDATE: NEW MOTOR

Talk about bad luck !

Good luck to them getting parts in a hurry. They owe you more then just a motor, how about a loaner that you can take your frustration out on...

Next season???

UPDATE: New motor time, they are replacing the entire motor, turbo, etc. I'm not sure how I feel about it. They say it looks like a casting issue internally letting the coolant get into the oil. Also you can not get assembled long blocks from yamaha (Thats what they told me anyway) so they are order every part, gasket, etc separately and will assemble at the dealer. They feel confident they can do this well and it will be better then a mass produced engine.

Such is my luck, first brand new sled ever and it comes with a bad motor and record snow :( I don't even know why I like this sport some days!!! I have located a BRAND NEW 06 apex I may buy!
Sorry to hear that, but fear not..I bought 2 brand new 2003 rx1's...and clipped a log with one, and broke the sump and the engine when it ran out of oil...My dealer rebuilt it for me...just matching bearings and cranks and stuff...first one he ever did..maybe the last..lol....but it ran like a bear. still out there running somewhere...

That really sucks kinger. I believe the 998 is built in China! Remember the Viper rod fiasco? I think Japan is sourcing to China since the tsunami happened and its rearing its ugly head as of late. Things that make you go hmmmm.

I'm a little surprised that this engine can't be sold as a long block. When I was working at a dealer we had a new 2004 RX-1 that seized up with only 24 kms on it. Yamaha motor out of Toronto promptly brought a complete new engine down. One of the service reps delivered it himself as they wanted to see what was wrong with the original.(oil pump drive shaft snapped)
As far as the outsourcing of engine building, I believe it was Sabaru, but I'm not sure where they were located. I wonder if they also made rods for the 16 Apex, because just last week I saw an Apex engine with a con rod through the side of the block, and yes it was stock. 5000kms, first one I ever saw blow.

Sorry to hear that sucks big time. Did they give any problems with the warranty and being flashed ? My dealer told me pretty much no motor warranty if I flash it and that Yamaha wants the ECU.

Kinger, apparently internal leaking happens to other brands too. I just got off the phone with my neighbour who has an 18 850 Doo, and asked if he wanted to ride tomorrow. He says "I'd love to, but my sled is at the dealer getting a new monoblock because it had a crack and coolant was getting into the engine."

That sucks no doubt but on the other hand your very lucky your dealer and Yamaha are doing anything for you if you had the ecu flashed. That totally voids any kind of warranties. I know and you know that the flash probably had nothing to do with what happened but Yamaha isn't going to look at it that way. I guess it goes back to the old saying if ya want to play you gotta pay.

Sorry this happened too you, worst timing ever. :(

Man this sucks...

But a good tech who pays attention to detail will do a good job.

Heck, I was able to build my Apex engine from scratch(parts from Yam) after my NOS incident. With some Tips from Jim and a trusty Yamaha manual it went smoothly and ran flawless after for many thousands of miles. Was still fast as hell too.lol

Good luck
Dan

Well sled still is apart at dealer. I have had some members PM me with valuable information and we think the head was the culprit. I’ll post more once I confirm. In the meantime. It’s going back together with some ARP head studs so she is ready for more boost next year. Apex will be built as a backup! I also bought the YES for 4 years on it which makes me sick but it is what it is. Yamaha if your reading your fading fast in the minds and hearts of even the most extreme loyalists like me. Get in or get out of sled business please.
