Hello all...

New to this site...looks like the best on the web!

Question: I just picked up a new '05 RX1 ER. The dealer service manager stressed to never run premium fuel in the sled...something about carbon buildup. This is new to me. Doesn't say anything the the manual about running higher octane fuel being a problem.

My issue is...it is only the premium in my area that is alcohol (10%) free and I won't run alcohol blended fuels in anything I own.

Does this make sense to anyone? Thanks! :ORC

First off welcome to theeeee best site on the web for the RX-1/Warrior ;)!
Compression isn't high enough to warrant premium, waste of money and you'll actually get poorer performance. Alcohol blended is fine as long as it doesn't exceed 10%.

Sounds like an ExLax add.

Ever since I 've owned a RX1 I've been regular, before owning the RX1, I was never regular. If you want to be regular, you should buy a RX1.

Thats good to know because I would have used Premium just figuring to use the best gas possible. Thanks :D that will save some money!

I ran premium in my RX1 right from the get go. Didn't seem to hurt anything, oh well. Will be running it in the Vector turbo as well, I guess you have to on the turbo's. I just get used to running premium in all my toys and don't give it a thought. my truck even runs premium (supercharged)

Well, in a 2 stroke sled, running too much octane will lead to excessive carbon build up, due to improper combustion (too much octane, not fast enough burn rate). The carbon will actually build up in layers, like "flakes" and these flakes will glow red with heat, then it will still pre-ignite like a glow plug in a diesel.

I saw this at one point at the Gladwin Co Ice carnival. A guy had a ZR500 or 600, that was decked right out with PSI pipes, big airs, etc.... and the squish was so tight, that when cold it would start and idle fine. But if he made 3 or 4 passes, let it sit for 10 minutes, then went back out, it would actually start and run backwards! He had RER before Doo ever did LOL

87 octain for me...

Not only does your sled get better gas milage then the TWO STROKERS.. But you also use cheaper Gas and NO OIL!!

Man FOURSTROKES ARE SWEET... I know my buddy with his zr800 was impressed when we rode together and i could beat him in a race and at the end of the day i got 4mpg better gas milage!

P.S. he also told me he reminds his dealer regularly that he got beat by a Yamaha!! :4STroke:

i know you dont need the extra octane of premium fuel but wouldnt a tank every now and then be good for the higher cleaning properties of premium fuel? :?

There is NO extra cleaning properties in higher octane fuel. The LOWER the octane, the faster it burns, the more clean you run.

A thought;
Higher octane fuel = more carbon buildup.
More carbon buildup = stuck rings = more oil consumption?
Less oil consumption = MORE POWER!!

You know whats the best part of regular fuel? Not haveing to wait in line with all your 2 smoke buddys when theres only 2 pumps. Gives ya more time to enjoy the scenery :drink: LaLaLa ;)!

Another advantage is fresher fuel with regular. Especially if you fill up at a mom and pop station in the middle of no where. Sleds are the only people buying premium from them and you can bet it's stale.

Interesting thought! ;)!

hmmmmmmmm????? 10,000 rpm on no lead.... it will come back to haunt u... one time u get some shitty fuel and u will be burning up pistons...
