Yea it can be done on a two stroke relatively easy to run them backwards but not on a four stroke.

the diamond drive is a planetary gear set. for reverse the engine would not be running in reverse it would be a gear in the drive itself...the problem i believe was finding a way to reliably engage and disengage this year. correct me if i'm wrong but thsi is what i remember reading

On my old Chris Craft, one of the 327s ran backward to offset the two screws. It had to have a different cam, distributor and starter. I believe the rest of the engine components were interchangeable.

Len todd u are correct aswell as some others
Kenny Bell started useing the 3.8 buick with these same mods special grind cam, distributor, starter, etc also they were odd fire and even fire motors

Twin engine aircraft and boats have used purpose build counter rotating engines for many years, however there is no way to make either one run backwards. one engine is designed to turn clock wise the other counter clock wise. To create a 4-stoke that could run backwards would cost way .......$$$$$$$........ to much and would most likely be heavier and less reliable than a mechanical reverse kit

If you really want to know about reverse spinning 4-strokes, just look under the hood of any RX1. Thats a backwards spinning motor!! Making it switchable is a more complex problem though... It could probably be done by swapping the intake ports for exaust and exhaust ports for intake (ie, when spinning backwards, put the fuel into the exhaust port and get fire out of the intake port). This switchover could be done easily with solenoids. The valve timing wouldn't be perfect, but it just might be close enough to run. Ignition timing is easy since its computerized (if (forward) use forward timing, if (backwards) use backwards timing).

They only have to add a gear in the rpm reduction gearbox and change the clutch rotation (push button). Simple...
