Why wouldn't this work ? All it needs is a cam that is designed to run in the opposite direction and an oil pump to do the same. As long as the valves open in the proper sequence it should work, Ken.

Well, if anyones going to figure out how to make a four stroke run backwards on a sled, you can bet it will be Yamaha.

It's one direction or another. Camshaft has to be different for L or R rotation. Its been done with boats for years but the engines are purpose built. Lots of other geometry is taken into consideration. Theoretically with variable valve timing and a good programmed ignition timing system you might be able to get one to run backwards as well as forwards but it won't run very good and the opposite forces may do damage to internals.

With a variable ignition and solenoid operated valves, you could do it. Not sure about an oil pump. Probably wouldn't matter if it quit pumping for a few seconds. Not like your gonna pin it in reverse and hold it there. I don't see why you couldn't make it work with Yammi's engineering. It would be a nice weight savings! Also would have been nice to have a pull start option to ditch a bunch more weight on the Phazer w/o reverse.

I think that would add weight and be a PITA just to get reverse lever A and Lever B!

The technology is already there in street vehicles. Also, solenoid driven valve trains can pull a higher RPM without fear of failure, and wear. It would be a MUCH lighter setup. No need for cams, cam chains, tappets, reverse linkage, gears, etc. Also, you could have on-the-fly variable valve lift and profiles. Nice tuning tool!

back in the 80, s had yamaha sr540 that probably had the first non gear reverse by accident. the timing had slipped orsomething to that effect. the engine would only run in reverse after the the steering column had broke. stopped the engine after pulling on the handle bars only to have the thrttle engage and jerk you back and get mor wot till i finally just let go of handle bars.

The new cat claims to have push botton reverse with the dimond drive so that musta of got that motor to run backwards somehow

I think cat's new reverse is the same as the yamaha's.......solenoid activated.

If it is that means it got the traditional reverse which doesn't work with the diomond drive...

I dont think they have the four stroke running backwards just to gain reverse it makes no sense especially with a trail sled where the extra weight really does not matter. I will believe it when I see one I really cant see them doing this.

Maybe the Dimond Drive on the spec sheet was a typo then, either that they are trying to trick people into buying it because of the "new technology..."

I thought i read somewhere that cat had figured out a way, to have reverse with diamond drive......If i didn't read it here it must of been over on hcs.
