I was wondering if the EXUP off the 2011 Apex could be installed in, say, my 2008 LTX GT? (Maybe a guy is to run across a totalled 2011 Apex) And how many extra ponies will EXUP give a Turbo'd or SC'd 2011 Apex as compared to 2010 and down??? Just a thought. Any ideas anyone?

It won't give more HP. It just reduces the exhaust flow at lower rpm's the increase back pressure. Yamaha has used the EXUP on the R1 and FZ1 bikes for years. It's also one of the 1st things guys remove for increased exhaust flow.

I think the entire exhaust is different on the 2011, You may be able to do it but you would probably need the entire exhaust and the servos to control it. Sounds like alot of expense and time for little if any performance.. better off going with a excell IMO...

I think you'll need more than just the exhaust to adapt it.
Electronics to control it, and you can bet that the changes they made to the valving have something to do with this.... so cams as well.

i think the jury is out on EXUP as to torque and HP....im hoping it gets rid of exhaust DRONE in my ears,and it should IMO increase torque on bottom end,this is something many exhaust builders have a problem with on bikes,when designing aftermarket exhausts....more open systems can make more HP but sacrifice torque....
it will be interesting to see the dyno numbers for torque on this new sled...this might be the key to drag racing the original apexs....torque will give much better low end which already we have strong amounts of but more is always better.
this may end up being more of a EPA/SOUND DECIBLE thing more then anything....yammie loves to hype things up but time will tell.
I just hope this somehow helps with the donut wearout issues we have all seen....the system is totally different now,4-1 and hoping that they took into acct the donuts.

I can't see this helping in a Drag race application since from a dead stop to WFO the engine basically goes to full rpm instantly....meaning power under the curve doesn't really help in this situation.
Where I can see it helping is in corner to corner roll on type riding. Where you're cruising at 80km/h @7k and roll on the throttle to pull through a corner.

Do you guys know if the EXUP valve has to be cleaned or have regular maintainence? One of the reasons I bought my 06 apex was so I wouldn't have to clean the exhaust valves on my 02 viper..

I've had exup on 3 of my Yamaha bikes and race them. I've never had to clean them although I did lube one when selling one of the bikes to get rid of the noise it made. When racing we keep the rpm's up at the limit so most guys would take off the exup and go with a full aftermarket exhaust and a map and make 10 to 15 more HP over stock. The exup for me was way more useful for daily street riding. No need to run around at max RPM when cruising the city. I remember doing some roll on tests with a friends R1 up against mine and when rolling from 4000 rpm I would pull away even though I was heavier. As the RPM's got up over 9000 he would start to gain on me. The full exhaust minus the exup was also lighter so the exup will add weight. Also the first bike I had with exup was my 1991 FZR1000. Yup 1991, so the tech has been around for some time.

The EXUP also allows them to use a stronger cam with more overlap(THEY SAID THEY DID THIS IN ONE OF THEIR VIDEOS) to increase top end hp. More overlap hurts low end but with the Exup it will have even more low and midrange than out pre 2011 Apexes.

It will be interesting to see... I can't wait until 2 years is up to see if everyone who bought a 2011 is ditching the EXUP or if everyone else is trying to add it to their pre 2011... We'll see what the results are... I do agree with Dan, the Jury is definately still out on this one.....

One thing about the new sled that everyone should appreciate is that the drone is gone. Still has the awesome Apex sound, but's it's slightly deeper, so it's not annoying, slightly quiter. It was one of the reasons I never bought an 06-10.

I like the drone, my grouchy retired neighbor doesn't though. On the other hand he says it is better than my old 98 XC700.
