I was thinking about picking up a radar gun to end some arguments this winter (actually, I'm sure it will start some new ones too).
Anyways, are there any reccommendations on a specific brand/type? Do I have to spend over $500 to get a decent/realistic one? What are some of the features I should look for or avoid?
Thanks Dudes.

Stalker is probably the best bet, and there are a few of them for sale on eBay right now.
I use a GPS for accurate speed measuring. Added benefit of GPS: if you have a buddy that is running strong and wants to race for beers, $$, whatever, a GPS can be slipped into his trunk when he's not looking. Then all he has to do is go out for a pass, and when he comes back you sneak the unit out, check recorded max. speed, and wager accordingly.
If your name is Tom, you ride an SRX and you live in Winnipeg, this has happened to you a few times last winter...

I'd recommend a gps, looking for one myself. Then you can use it all the time for navigating and checking actual speed.

I'll vote for using a GPS. I have one and can get speed info off of it at different points on a run. It's also nice to use when out riding for mapping purposes.
A radar gun would be fun to use just for speed runs though. It just requires the extra person to stand there and use it and it doesn't have the extra functions.

I currently have a Garmin GPS. I mounted to my XC800 with thier marine mount and powered it from my battery. The only thing is that alot of times when I would review the "trip data" page, it would display my highest mph at some crazy value like 168mph or something. It happens quite often. Must just be the way the thing picks up the satellites or something. I'm looking for a reliable, dedicated device.

I've had good luck and lots of fun with my Stalker ATS. Completely downloadable in my laptop with acceleration and decelleration graphs, as well as top speed
What are you using it for? Tuning? if so, I use a timing system and a radar gun. I never get to caught up in absoulute top end as much as acceleration and a radar gun wont tell you that. You have to use a timing system that records ET's from point to point. If top end is all you are trying to achive then a radar gun or GPS is the way to go...BBY

Hi Blue.
What are you using for a timing system. I'm looking for a cheap system for personal use only. Don't need a full race setup. Any suggestions?

I have the speedchek radar, and use it a lot. It works great, and can see it a 1/4 mile away. I also use it for ice ovals, for checking how fast I am comming into the corners, and out of the corners, for the fastest way, entering/exiting. I got mine for 90 bucks on ebay.
