Real World 1500 Mile Low Down of new Ski Doo XR-S 900 Turbo vs. SideWinder

When I run my sled 270r, when I hit it ,it will go to 9000 and then back to 8850. According to Dyno sheets I’m making max hp between 8600 to 8800, this is with stock 112 belt, When I use xox 5060 belt , when I hit it, it will go to 8600 and then build to 8800 in 1000 ft, IS it better to run the XTX being it staying in the torque band ? Is it better to clutch in the beginning of the torque curve and run through it to max 8800 and then gear to it, say 1000 ft. 7900 to 8600 is in the max torque curve . 168 ft lbs is max

I like this new & improved KNAPP!
He was able to boast about his accomplishments without bragging AND nobody got yelled at or scorned.
I think he's ready to come to Maine to get OCD'd!

Mike, would you be excited to have Yamaha build a 3 cylinder 850 2-stroke?

Honestly I wouldn't get excited for any two-stroke, but it would damn sure be better than any twin cylinder two-stroke 850 built to date, that is certain. Big twin cylinder two-strokes (larger than say a 600-700) are a bag of dog poop... Hard on clutches and crank parts, but they keep building them and people keep buying them for some odd reason. Triple two strokes are far superior, four cylinders are even better!

Same with a four-stroke, four cylinders are far superior to the triple four-strokes. Hope Yamaha eventually comes out with a turboed Apex engine in a Chassis that rides and handles good!

Guess I'd need to install my stock muffler setup to run in Maine huh... I suppose I could spot you a few HP and just run my 225 tune against your 240 right? Would make it more interesting and a bit closer for ya Steve... LOL.

Spot ya a couple horsepower.... now that’s funny #*$&@!
Good thing you can change your tunes with the push of a button cuz if I go....your gonna need to switch back too the bad boy 300hp or have a shriveled male body parts, you choose.

Bust out the popcorn and :drink:

The problem with a triple two stroke is the single pipe. A single pipe works great on a twin, but not on the triple.

Clutchmaster, thanks for this, I'm slowly wrapping my mind around this. Could you say something about the performance difference between a typical hypothetical 2 stroke versus a typical hypothetical 4 stroke of equal horsepower.

As an aside, spring ordering a sled seems to stretch time by a factor of 10 ... IS IT ONLY MAY!!!

Two strokes have a narrower torque band than four strokes. This is due to the fact they have a tuned pipe that limits how wide an rpm the engine can run efficiently. Torque comes on at a higher rpm and faster in a two stroke.
Generally speaking your clutching needs to hit harder once the rpm’s get close to peak torque. This requires using more aggressive weights and springs in the primary. You don’t want to load the motor down low in the rpm as much as a four stroke, it will be doggy and boggy.

Who Wants a triple with a single pipe? Not me!

You are not clutched for 225 so i'll give 270. Plus i just don't want to hear every time you pull up to a stop you don't have time to pee cuz i've been there waiting for 10 minutes & it's time to go.
Corners make Drag Racers PEE!

Most important OCD Maine riding tip:
No matter how much HP you bring, at 6:05 if you're still sleeping, the possibility of getting TEABAGGED becomes REALITY!

I'm under the assumption that Yamaha would bring some super high tech triple to the table that doesn't need triple pipes, but BOY-o-BOY i miss those triples!

I’m just gonna build my own triple pipe turbo
2 smoke, can’t wait forever.

Hey thats my old pal Gus Bohne. I ported him up a 1050 Cat triple back in the day. He makes some beaucoup power with the turboed two-strokes he helps tune. For a period of time he held the Dynotech HP record. I think that 4 cylinder 1700 went about 700 HP back a few years ago.
