Real World 1500 Mile Low Down of new Ski Doo XR-S 900 Turbo vs. SideWinder

One question I have is how long are the Doo 4strokes lasting? Are they getting 20,000+ mi with no internal servicing? I honestly don't know. Saw the cutaway 1200 doo motor when it came out and the internals scared me with the cheap looking gears and the cam arrangement that looked like the old k-cars that used to have all the rockers laying in valve cover at times. Are they holding up?

I honestly don't know what the big deal is? I like both Doo and Yamaha. Doo makes great stuff and you can't deny they are number 1 for a very good reason. When I bought my Winder I didn't go nuts bashing my old Doo. I couldn't because I still liked it. I will have a couple new Doo's next season and I may also still have my Winder. I don't know why you have to have one or the other and I don't know why you have to bash the one you don't have.

I've heard of lots of 1200 owners with 15 to 20 thousand miles on them and never an engine issue. I myself would never own a sled with that many miles. I get bored with them too soon to ever get that far.

Hey lads....I'm the one who started this whole thread and this is the first post in this thread:

Here's a link to an interesting article that was just posted today on Snow Tech Magazines web site that gives their thoughts on the new Ski Doo 900 Turbo sled and how it stacks up to the SideWinder after they logged 1500 miles on the new Ski Doo Turbo.

It's a good read and really lays the cards on the table as to what Ski Doo is looking to accomplish with this new sled/motor combo in comparison to the SideWinder:

https://www.snowtechmagazine.com/2019-ski-doo-renegade-x-rs-900-ace-turbo/

I simply wanted to post a well written and very objective link to the article that Kevin Beilke from SnowTech magazine wrote. Kevin is as straight a shooter as you'll ever find in the snomo mag biz when it come to evaluating and giving his honest opinions without any sugar coating. Here is a paragraph from the article that I thought was one of the best comparisons between the two sleds:

For starters, this sled is not really comparable to a Yamaha Sidewinder. We say this because it is the most logical machine to compare it to, and if you’re expecting the performance of a 200 HP Sidewinder, the 900 ACE Turbo is not quite in that league. This is a 150 HP sled, one that has impeccable handling and the very best rear suspension you can get, so the ride and handling of the Renegade X-RS is also not in the same league as the Sidewinder. But back to the power, if one is used to the instant throttle response of the Sidewinder and the wicked acceleration that 200 HP delivers you will find the 900 Turbo to be somewhat tame in comparison. Know that going into this, as Ski-Doo did not target the Sidewinder.

I really regret starting this thread because there has hardly been any positive comments made about what Ski Doo is trying to accomplish with this new sled. I am a Yamaha guy through and through but I think that some of us Yamaha guys are just too darn narrow minded and can't really see the whole picture.

I hope that this thread can turn around and get back on the right track and all of the negativity towards Ski Doo and fellow members will come to an end.

MrSled started this site to highlight the positives about this sport and I hate to see all of his hard work and efforts get washed down the drain like this thread is going in a hurry.

Why is so hard to take the high ground at times and just not say anything instead of just bashing something or someone?

What are we arguing about anyway? It's just a freakin' snowmobile!

End of my rant :)

Still looks like a duck.
LOL!
I'm sure it's a fine sled. I didn't like what I read about the tame throttle response. A 150 hp sled should still sht n git, imo. Fly by throttle or not.

Good question. I wonder where the 60 pound weight savings is. My sidewinder doesn't seem to have a lot of unnecessary girth, chassis-wise.

I rode doo for decades when they were last in sales, and focused on twin trackers when the rest went sno cross. Once Doo decided to go snocross racing, sales skyrocketed. My last place doos still had many redeeming qualities! I will say, the sidewinders are the BEST, FUNNEST DAMN LAST PLACE SALES SLEDS EVER!!!Lol!!

I'd also like to know where the Sidewinder got it's weight. AmSnow published a wet weight of a Viper LTX w/ MPI turbo at 630 lbs and a Sidewinder LTX at around 670 lbs. That 40 lbs more than the turbo Viper. Where did all the weight come from???

Cannondale27,
I would consider the 1200 to be durable product. New XS plastic on it, was coming along nicely.
Same could be said about 900ace & 600ace.

I think team yellow red flagged it, in part, due to royalties to partner who helped with development.

Most brp engines stay in their lineup for not more than 10 years. With some exceptions. 583/ series 3 600 twin/ and the now shelved 1200

Not a good comparison IMO.

Using the XRS figures to my sled(same shock style) they are about 40lbs diff. I believe.

Now, ride the DOO, and then ride the Winder.....I owned them all, and the 4tec "feels" Heavier then my winder does. Heavier steering, needed to run less carbide and still was a tad heavier steering effort then my winder with 8" carbides(same skis)

900t will be nice, but it will have same stuff I dont like about doo, like using special tools to work on them, charging huge dollars for parts and accessories, far more work to remove plastics and tools needed, and NO LED headlight or LED signature lighting. Same old gauges.

There are pros and cons to ALL brands, and its pretty sad when guys jump on band wagon for one camp then diss that same sled a few months later. Its cause some people are spoiled little kids that have their Daddys buy them everything. They are always fastest, and own the best.

I kinda like being on the redheaded stepchild with all the belt issues...LOL.

were a dysfuntional group dano...

this has become a richmans sport ...I dont know how most can change with the wind ...season to season anyway

Im just honored to be with a great group of guys...and think the winder has the best power plant...after than...always trade offs...something to deal with...you wanna play...you pay.

truth be told...I find the good in most of the sleds I own...but once you taste the turbo crack...its really hard to go back...

If I had known Turbos are this fun, my Nytro would have been gone sooner and would have have been on the old Suzuki turbo in 2012-13, at least until this weapon came along.

Well i would like to thank Don for a nice post & link that has turned into a pee pee sword fight. I WILL say this. I HATE when guys post their "top" speeds because conditions are soooooo important. Only head to head counts on reasonably similar set ups.
I ran 117 on a lake & the 850 ran 110. I ran 105 at noon with new snow & the 850 ran 97.
99% of all races are buddies lining up on a straightaway or lake crossing in-between TRAILS!

I don't give a rats' arse what the top end of this new DOO is!
I'm sure it will hit 100 & i'm sure the 850 will hit 120 somewhere on earth.

I want to know:
-can i make it quicker if it isn't already?
-can i get good mileage if i need to?
-can i go all year on one belt especially since DOO belts are $180?
-does it sound like a lawnmower?
-will i be able to make it NOT sound like a lawnmower?

P.S. I must compliment the magazine for what seemed like an honest write up. For the first time an article has been written almost criticizing a SkiDoo product. Not in a negative way, but rather a matter of factly way. This sled will sell Big Time.....kudos to BRP

Here's another not so glowing review for the 900t. Does not seem like the mags are any too keen about it. They go as far as to say about the 900t, "we'll pass", then go on to praise the Winder for it smooth and powerful delivery of power.

You can clearly see them trying to be politically correct and somewhat endorse Doo's new offering, but then backhand it towards the end of the review.

So true, every time someone I know tried a 1" hacksaw track on their "trail" hypersled to pick up some speed ended up with it on the machine for only one week, the next week they had their 1.25" back on the sled it was that poor for trail use next to the 1.25". I've even been thinking going to a 1.5" myself.

I liked the electronic Ohlins on my 07 Attak and had no problems with it, but it was always thawed off in my heated garage after every ride. I know plenty that broke the wires and the sleds with manual remote dial adjust ripped the heavy cables out of them. Doo has the best remote adjust as far as reliability with the adjusters on the running board.

I can't turn the knob on my QS3r's when its all froze up and packed with snow, but I ride on 1 all the time anyway. I've tried running on 2 but too stiff for my liking so it never goes there anyway. IMO 1-2-3 is too large of a step. Should have the normal 20 or 24 clicks.

I'll stick with my LTX-LE which will hold value much better now that Yamaha limited production for 2019. I think this will be the last season with Cat anyway. IMO they'll be back producing Japan only product for 2020. I hope Doo has an actual 200-225HP four-stroke by that time, as Yamaha can't build a good lightweight chassis and suspension that rides and handles on par with Doo and Cat.
Funny mike,i ride 90% of the time with my clickers on #1 as well, and want mine revalved to soften 2 and 3 it would be nice to try 3,but I am not a road jumper lol.
