The bolts are strengthened by tempering with heat. If you exceed the temperature at which they are tempered then they will lose that strength. Grade 5 and 8 bolts are tempered around 450'F. Anybody shoot those bolt heads with an infra red temp gun?
Stainless are just too soft. And a royal pita when you brake one.

interesting....guess its no screwing around with this stuff....get it ..screwing around...okay...anyways....
arp makes chromoly studs finished in black oxide...i would think the strength and heat would be fine? what say you experts?

Actually fatchance the specs for those bolt grades is an 800 degree minimum tempering temperature (at least for the A325 and A490 structural grades). The bolts are strengthened by tempering with heat. I'm by no means a materials expert when it comes to these applications. What we need is a mechanical engineer to chime in and tell us the correct bolt material for this application that will be unaffected by heat. I know in my truck temps through the turbos can exceed 1200 degrees when i'm on the throttle hard, not sure what we have here in this motor though. What are typical exhaust manifold bolts made out of?interesting....guess its no screwing around with this stuff....get it ..screwing around...okay...anyways....

True, some will be tempered at higher temps and that is why there is a general 450'f rating on these.
SJ, I actually called ARP and asked them about this. They assured me their black chrome bolts would work as they are rated 12.9 grade @ 210,000 psi

I bought some ARP bolts last year for my skid. Good stuff. I got them at Allen's fasteners.

On my cat , I used exhaust manifold bolt/nut which came out of a mustang gt i believe...ford dealer..fyi
Cool...thanks...would that be the black oxide then>? I cant seem to find ones with these specs

So the stainless bolts I put in are not a good choice? Man this is pissing me off not knowing what is going to work. It's not like I need to take them in and out a lot. I can see stockers maybe having to take out a bit more to get at the chain tensioner.

my stainless with 2400 degree nickel anti seize are fine...but watch me jinx myself now...so Ill look for those above
I had to refer back to the ARP site where it states tensile strength between 180,000 and 210,000 psi ARP M8-1.25 12 PT Black Oxide Flange Bolt, HEAT-TREATED 8740 CHROME MOLY

I just installed the TD SQ today.....I decided to go back to stock torx bolts, I believe they are made to withstand the heat. I also think you do not need to torque these down too much. Could be why normal bolts are breaking if torqued when cold then heated and cooled time and time again...who knows.
I torqued to 18ft lbs and used some lockwashers on them, and with TD SQ you only use 5 bolts and not bother with the one you cannot get at.

That looks nice. Can you get at the chain adjuster with the muffler?

Not with any of the larger body muffler no, only ones that leave access are the narrow straight thru designs which tend to be louder. That looks nice. Can you get at the chain adjuster with the muffler?
We are working here with a local exh guru on a solution for quiet AND access to chain adj.....Will see how things progress, Cause removing the muffler is a pain.
My own design im hoping to bring to life would have a V band disconnect, for a much faster/easier removal to adj chain. Not having to unbolt the major Pain in #*$&@ outlet bolts.

I removed my exhaust bolts without any issue after 2000k. I had installed hex heads with a healthy amount of anti seize(after having the issues I did at 50k) and they came out real easy. Pretty confident I'll no longer have any issues with them.

The stock bolt that was removed/installed several times snapped on this one...grrr
spent the day monday drilling out the hardened bolt, and finally got an easy out on it and it came....pain in #*$&@!
I now chase threads each time before new install, and use hi temp anti-seize and will be trying SS bolts this next time, and do not torque them too tight, and use a lockwasher. Also will only install NEW bolts each time, never using bolts more then once anymore. Also use 20mm not 25mm length.
