There is play in the primary clutch, I was just assuming there are splines in the shaft assembly going back to the crank similar to the 3 hole.
Edit: reduction gear according to this post:

years ago I had the kit for the three hole installed in my RX. Got rid of the rattle. I believe that the kit was o-rings and was installed by yamaha. my sled went from the worst clutch rattle to the quietest. Reduction rattle still there when cold but much quieter.

If you grab ahold of the clutch and move it left and right you will see that there is play in the gear reduction PTO which is normal gear to gear movement. I own three of these sleds and they all do it. Keep in mind that the four stroke four cylinder engine has four BTDC firing pulses which tries to push back down on the piston and crankshaft opposite of normal engine rotation and the gear reduction shaft PTO and crankshaft are opposing each other with every ignition pulse, hence the noise. The noise is worse cold and at lower idle. When warm and the gears expand the tolerance, or say we say slop, is lessened and the idle being faster cuts down on this. The two stroke fires at TDC so there is no attempt to push down opposite of normal rotation so no excess force on the piston/crankshaft.

Both two strokes and four strokes fire before TDC. There could possibly be an exception to that but as a rule they all do! They have to to time the explosion and its expansion for maximum thrust on the piston on its downward stroke. While you and I might think the explosion and expansion is instantaneous it is not. The spark has to be before TDC or maximum pressure would occur partway down on the pistons power stroke. This applies to four stroke and two stroke gasoline engines. The faster the engine's rpm is the further before TDC the spark is.
When every cylinder fires it gives a pulse (speeds up) and when every cylinder comes up on compression it meets resistance (slows down) combine with slower rpm and it takes the slack out of the gears in either direction. Increasing the rpm smooths out the cycle by giving less time for forward and back on the slack in the gears. It also gives less time for the flame or explosion to build pressure in the cylinder before TDC. If two strokes had a gear reduction they would rattle as well.

I should have updated this old post.Morning all, I have a 03 and love sled, start it in garage every.couple weeks and warm it up to 175, I can't stand listening to this damn clutch or bucket of bolts any more, just hate to not get real users opinion on who's to order, I am sure some a better with noise than other's, or is it better to find a used.clutch from another model sled? Thanks for any help.View attachment 108211
I had Schmidt Bros rebuild both clutch's
With helix change (replaced all bushings.
And it is about 50% quoted and performs super.

If I can I will post a vid...The rubber pucks are bad in the PTO causing slop..And forget about changing out tho's pucks while the PTO is on the sled...IMPOSSIBLE..

Why do you have to pull the motor to change the PTO? Are you talking about the gear reducer! What pucks?

Yes you have to pull the motor to change the PTO..The PTO also drives a little chain the makes the water pump and oil pump operate..If you look at a parts fische of the PTO the break down shows 5 rubber dampeners...I'am working on a 04 warrior were I was getting alot of clutch noise, with the engine off I could grab the primary clutch on the engine and move it back and fourth a half inch..No raising of the idle can fix that at all..What a huge job this is...If I can I will post pics and vids but I have to get this sled done ASAP..

Ok you guys...Go to any parts fiche...Look up the PTO.....You will see 5 rubber pucks the go in there...Big time slop when they are worn...IMO it also thro's out timing for oil and water pump, how's that................!!!!!!
