Apparrently my chain tensioning bolt fell completely out and all the chaincase oil leaked out of the chaincase.

Ugh! I have 350 miles.. I guess I'll be checking my bolt/adjusting tension before I even think about riding it again!

I only have 150 on mine and it was 2.5 turns out and the nut was loose. I wasnt even going to check it, but I had it stripped and figured why not? My serial is a low number (198 I think) if it matters

Mine is 1586 if t matters.

I had a similar problem on my RX-1 when the chain case gasket was not seated properly above the oil fill level. It only leaked when riding and showed no signs until I could hear a whining noise and narrowed it down to the chain case. By then it was empty and smoking.

NO! Can't happen! The only Yamaha failures are Cats fault!!!!!

<sarcasm mode off>

Ok, so far we have only 1 serious issue. While that is never fun for the person involved, think of what this thread would look like on a Doo or Poo site? How many engines and drive trains? I personally know guys that have had MULTIPLE Poo engines go in one year. A friend with a new Doo has already had to take it back for warranty on a serious drive train issue at less then 200 miles.

Yes there will be issues, but PLEASE PLEASE don't let there be as many issues as the 2007 Phazer had and I will be happy. Even half those issues and I will be happy. And Cat had nothing to do with the Phazer by the way. :tg:

I've updated my earlier post on the Chain Case Failure thread.

Sorry that happened to you. But sounds like human error on the build and not a parts failure per se. Sorry it happened to you but glad only one out of thousands had this happen. Doesn't help you though.

Is it possible the chain became so loose it damaged the case and caused a leak? Just curious.

Thanks!

Not that it helps much but if they can't get you a chain case you could buy one from cat I bought one off the 2013 snopro for under 100.00 same exact case.

The hot start might not be at the top of serious issues however, it is very annoying/embarrassing riding a brand new sled and it not starting.

Just curious, do you have a noticeable amount of slack in the throttle? I am curious if this is an adjustment issue, because if it was an ECU issue most if not all would have this problem like the infamous cold start issue on the 2007 Phazer. I could be wrong though.

UPDATE !!!

XTX is ready.....pick it up in the morning.

Exactly 1 week from when I took it in. My dealer really stepped up on this one. They've been outstanding !!

I know you all want to know what was replaced and will have your own opinions on what should have been replaced. I already know there is one part they couldn't get.....not physically damaged but subjected to high heat and therefore shortened it's lifespan.......that they will replace on a return visit as soon as it comes in. The plan was to get me back on the trail. Everything is covered under warranty including the return trip and anything else related that might happen. Everything has been documented by the regional Yamaha rep here.

I'll update again tomorrow when I know more !! All my spring order goodies are in too !!!

I was speaking to a Yamaha rep about the Viper issues that have popped up and he suggested that, for whatever reason, the Thief River falls workers may have been less attentive on the Yamaha assembly line then the Cat side. He said that Yamaha has taken steps to correct this and that the workers better get used to it as it is their future!

My local dealer has sold 56 Vipers, only 5 have had issues.
My wife's was the least critical, Bad hot grip out of the box. They've had 3 No start cold when new, (that has gone away with some miles on).
And one that has had issues, First would not start cold, then had coolant leaks and last has shifted out in the chain case at about 80 KPH.
All in less than 500K.

Our Viper came without the radiator protector.....that is a dealer installed part at PDI. I called them and made sure they still have it...lol. Anybody else have a dealer not put radiator protector on?

Funny...That's just what I was thinking while reading all these posts.... Shame if it's true.
