I bought a new stx . It's like an xtx with the regular shocks in front. I have the oppurtunity to change the front stocks for the float Fox 3 . I was wondering if it is the best way to stay with the spring or go with the float?

Spring shocks are better riding in the soft stuff, but if you get into any big bumps or rough riding the Fox Float 3 are WAYYY better. Depends on your riding style.

Stick with the springs. more reliable, simpler, better ride unless youre doing some kind of racing they are more than capable enough for most people.

Alsim, unless you are an aggressive rider I would recommend staying with the current shock package up front. As recommended, you can do a number of different upgrades to your existing shocks. Or you can contact one of the outstanding shock manufacturers, Elka is a Canadian suspension company that has a stellar reputation and is the supplier of choice for Yamaha Crosscountry Racing and Hillclimb Racing for the Viper.
Elka, or any one of the custom Shock companies like Hygear, can build a shock for your riding style and weight. I would still try the production shock first, it will take about 125-150 miles to break in your stock shocks. At least then you will have a starting point when your talking to the technician who will modify your current shocks or build your new set. You then will be able to provide your "likes and dislikes" as part of the performance discussion. Remember, everyone is different and has different needs!
Good luck!

For trail riding I like the coil over shocks much more on my ltx than the fox float 3s I ran last year. If the price is right u could buy the floats and try them, whichever suits u best you can sell the others.
I have a full set of Axis from Hygear I'm looking to unload. PM.

you tell them how much you weight and you tell them what kind of riding you do and they send you the proper springs. nice and smooth on the trails and for harder riding the stiffer spring engages. easy to install. took me like 20 minutes to install them

Or you can get the Dual Pressure Kit from Hygear. Low price option to turn into Evols. I was pleasantly surprised after adding the kit.Ya. I was bottoming out before on rough stuff. Not anymore
Stock is to soft if you want to ride hard or do small jumps. There prob for 180lb rider
Air shocks to hard and if u run lower air psi then you you will bottom out. Unless you stop and pump them up when u get to rough stuff. Last thing I want to do

Don't sell the air shocks short! Revalve them and they're a really good shock that's almost half the weight. And there's no better shock for rough trails. As far as them leaving you stranded, unless you puncture the shaft or bend the shock it's not going to explode like a tire and leave you stranded. Just don't go on a long trip and leave your pump at home.
