Yeah, that's probably it....fxnytrortxkid said:Yamaha and cat have diff mappings, the yamaha version Atleast at the test rides in spring was much better. Guys would get off the cat an not want to ride the viper, then ride the viper and be really excited. I think cat may be pushing their "pure" cat sleds over the hybrid one with yamaha.

its probably true yamaha speedos are 10 mph off. they say cats are accurate within a 1 mph.

I've read pretty much every article written about the Viper and have never heard that....unless Yamaha has does something drastic to the motor I doubt much has changed HP wise between the two
Does anybody know what the gearing is in the Viper? Could it be that the Vipers gearing needs to be changed? I tried gearing my Nytro up for more top end and it actually went and felt slower than the stock gearing.
If you read the article more closely you will see that the tests were in elevation where you are going to lose a significant amount of hp.

I have the snowtech edition that talks about the viper and read the article twice lol, just relaying what I read.

I thought 4 strokes did not lose HP at higher elevationsnytrozula said:If you read the article more closely you will see that the tests were in elevation where you are going to lose a significant amount of hp.

Any "normally aspirated" engine will lose hp the higher you go. The "weight" of the air around us is what pushes air into the engine and fills the cylinder. The higher you go, the less pressure, so there is less filling. Turbos force air in, and therefore can create their own high pressure atmosphere inside the intake manifold. Hope that helps.

I finally read the articles. Think about it. Even IF the Viper only goes 80 mph(which we would fix darn quick) it still was the sled of choice among every single magazine that rode both. When the factory turns it up for us guys it is going to be in a whole different league! Dont worry guys.
I heard the new Viper is about the same as a 600 etech, but about 70lbs heavier in one magazine. It very quick to 35mph they said, and then dies down to a nice daily cruiser with a max of 80mph
This is funny, what a joke. No one has any ride time with a broken in viper. Unless they tweaked the mapping I hear that the viper could be 4-5hp less then a Nytro cause of the exhaust, but weighs less. So more then likely very close in overall speed. Don't worry guys it has yamaha engineering, and quality, in a cat light weight chasis

The Viper should have 4-5 more HP because of the exhaust, not less. Snowgoer is a rag much like most of the mags that are basing all of their testing and results off hand-built prototypes. I rode the Viper XTX and my Nytro back to back in Grand Rapids last spring. The Viper was definitely down on power, but I truly believe it was just a mapping issue. It wasn't the arm pulling power that motor will produce. Talking to various Yamaha employees at the unveiling in Minneapolis last spring, at the test ride in Grand Rapids, and at Haydays a couple weeks ago, the Viper is gonna be 3 to 4 HP more than the Nytro on the dyno and 20 to 25 lbs lighter on the scale. Oh and not to mention, the ride quality and handling is hands down 250% better than a Nytro. Add in the changes/improvements made in the last month and I don't see how the Viper will be anything but a very rock solid, sweet azz ride!
