Indy, you are likely not overfilling either. I am starting to rule out over filling as the cause for excess consumption. But the breather is still suspect.
Does anybody know if these sleds have a PCV valve or filter??
LOTS of car guys (and some m cycle) use sea foam and they rave about it. LB does have a point with Y's ring free though.
Jim, how many miles do you have?? Cant be much more that 6K right? On a 4 cycle motor that would be unusual for carboned rings, 2 cycle sure because you are buring oil. Unless your breather is putting out a lot of oil vapor. You know vs. the R1 bike we are hitting 50 X as many bumps. Do you think it is possible instead of vapor out the breather we could be putting out streams of oil because of the bumps?
If this was my sled I would build and accumulater like this guy did (using the white PVC pipe part of it) and put it inline with the breather hose. That way I could determine if that was the problem and see what/ how much was going through there. http://bernardembden.com/xjs/pcvfilter/

I had to ride half the first season without a speedometer/odometer, so this isn't perfectly accurate, but I kept track of my trips and came up with a very close estimate. I should have around 5000-5500 if I remember right. I think it reads 3900, which would make it around 5500 total. Break in was performed somewhere between dealer reccomended and ride it hard. I took it easy for the first ride or two, then rode it normal. I was living in an area where there was no option of high speed runs, except a very quick burst of 90-100 mph, so the speed varied a lot. Should have been perfect break-in conditions...lots of acceleration and deceleration.
I have checked my airbox, and although it gets some fine oil mist in there with a very little deposited in the airbox, it doesn't look like where my oil has been going. I used roughly 8-10 quarts, give or take, last season...if the oil went through the breather, I would think that airbox would have LOTS of oil left in it. Even if the engine ingested it through the carbs, there should still be enough vapor getting on the airbox to leave a lot in there. I just have like a teaspoon of oil which ran down under where the end of the breather hose is.
I have had friends riding behind me say that my sled stinks. There is no smoke when riding it, at least none that I've ever been told about or seen, but if its putting out a bad small that would be a sign of burning oil. Even so, a quart every 200 miles should smoke like a '73 Pinto with 250,000 miles on it. I have looked all over the engine compartment and can't find any sign that its leaking oil either. So its still a mystery as to exactly where the oil is going.

What about poor drain back from the overhead valve train?
I had a buick once that got those oil drain back ports plugged and she burned oil when I did high speed runs (dad, may he rest in peace, never could figure out why it only burned oil when I was driving it??)
Those ports could get plugged up enough to keep the oil from draining back down to the pan and on high rev stuff could cause it to burn the excess pooled oil.
I haven't had the motor down to the heads to see but has anyone ever looked to see the size of these drain holes? LB, using that old garage oil could clog them enough to cause the high rev running to do an incomplete drain, don't yah know, and answer the mistery question. Or.....
Maybe gremlins??

I have 0 miles on my new rx1-er 05. First thing I did was go over the sled with a fine tooth comb. When I checked the oil [ according to the owners manual, they say do not thread the dip stick in, read it while it rest's on the top thread] the level was at the "E" mark. I called the dealer to let him know. He gave me an extra quart [ he only uses synthic oil] but advised me not to add any. He claims that if you add oil according to the owners manual that you are actually overfilling it. He claims when you check your oil with the dip stick resting on the top thread that it should only be to the "E" mark. He claims that is why some people are burning oil every 500-1000 miles while others are not. They end up overfilling it because they follow the owners manual. Don't know if he's right, he does ride his RX Warrior constantly. But, makes you wonder??? :ORC I'm not sure on what to do. Follow Yamaha's manual or my dealer's advice?

I fill mine according to the manual . I use a product that cleans the rings and keeps them clean . mine will use about 1/3 litter in 5000 klm . Tis usage all happens in the last 1000 klm because the oil is getting old and starting to breack down . Others on this site have used seafoam and the oil burning stopped . Anybody that knows how an egine works would know that it is the rings carboning up that is causing the oil consumpsion . If it was something else the seafoam would not do a thing for it .

Thx banjo, this pretty much is what I have been thinking from the begining. I guess to see for sure, the guys that are using a lot of oil might try this to see if it helps. If the motorcycles dont have the problem, (I cant find anything on it) then something that is different has to be the problem. I hear we have yammie factory guys on here sometimes. This would be a time for them to post up.
Banjo, could you please ask your dealer if yamaha has said anything to him about this??? Was your oil fully warmed when you checked it? My dealer says only check it when it is hot.

Yo! I warmed it up for about 10 minutes before checking. Struck me funny, being brand new and all. I also checked the coolant. My mixture was right on, but I did have to add a cup or so to bring it up the the cool level. When I talk with the dealer again I'll ask, but I bet he will say from dealing with problem before. Maybe he's right? I think I'll wait for the oil light before adding.

Another thing struck me funny. Everywhere I go on the internet, Yamaha Corp., all the dealers sites that have spec's on the RX1 say 87 octane gas is O.K. But, according to the owners manual you have to use 89 octane in the sled. Maybe they have some typo's or trouble translating certain things in the book. If the gas is wrong, maybe their proceedure for checking oil is wrong? Just a thought.

The owners manual says 88 which is what you get in Japan.

My dealer said "forget what the book says, warm it up by going for a ride, keep the level between the low and full marks and no higher" It is funny we have 2 dealers saying something that does not totally jive with the manual. Both are avid riders, mine puts on 2500+ miles per year for 2 years now on the 4 strokes.

I decided to follow his advice. If anything happens it will be on his shoulders. I started it today [we were susopsed to get 6" of the white gold, but changed to rain] I have to say it sounds like my four stroke 4 wheeler. Not as loud, but you can hear it.

Some put oil out the breather yet others do not. I wonder if this is a tie in to what your dealer is saying.

One bad thing to do that I can think of is this;
If you ride it and let it warm up, then shut it down for long enough to let the oil seep back into the crankcase, then start it up and let it RIPPPP before the oil has a chance to be pumped OUT of the crankcase, then that could lead to a pile of oil being dumped out of the breather.
Always let the thing idle for a minute or two EVERY time you start it. I'm sure that I don't even do this myself, which could explain everything.

I don't know Tork. What my dealer said makes sense to me. He not only sells them but rides them as well. Not everyone changes the oil exactly the same way.
Maybe to some they measure with the oil stick on the top thread while other's screw it in and then check.
Heck, I haven't even rode the sled let alone had any serious problem's.
I think LB has hit it on the head about the breather thing. He seem's to know alot about the RX1.
I am curious thought. I wonder how many owner's that have left their sled's stock have the problem "burning" oil versus those that have added filter or evac kits

I have found some Yamaha feed back on this topic:
Basically if the Seafoam (Yamaha would prefer Ring-Free) works, that's great!!! If the Seafoam/Ring-Free doesn't work, units will likely need the '05 rings installed. There is no bulletin or campaign, if a customer has a problem they will need to get to their dealer and provide good info so Yamaha can confirm and validate a REAL problem.
If the unit is past warranty Yamaha will need to discuss with the dealer about possible goodwill repair. But any out of warranty units will be "case-by case discussion".
Side Note: If you use Seafoam or Ring-Free you should make
sure to change oil and filter when done.
