Starter Questions!

How do you know when the one way clutch is out? Does it normally free wheel one direction? We are having an issue with a 2nd burned out starter.

When I do starter replacements I'm now pulling the flywheel to inspect the one way clutch spring to make sure it's not stretched and also to inspect the hub on the ring gear. With all the work and cost to replace a starter and the fact that I'm pulling the stator cover I'm thinking for the extra 50-60 dollars it's probably a good idea to just replace the clutch.

Thats what I am thinking. Since It so tough to tell if thats whats taking out the starters.

Fresh clean starter installed! You can see between above pic above and this one how much things open up with very little motion upward of engine...

This was a great right-up & I am sure it took a lot of thought to do this. This will be great for people that have to replace their starters. Let me ask you this question. If machine is under warranty would Yamaha replace for free. Is this right-up for a Nitro only & will this procedure work on a Vector the same way.
Thank's in advance
Rich

I am not familiar with the Vector layout but hopefully Yamaha added 1" behind the motor so this sequence is not required! If you have a warranty claim, the Yamaha dealer will tell you up front if it is in warranty or out... or if he can't once he has diagnosed the issue. I know it was still an effort to do but nothing like Yamaha recommends with removing the engine or some of the other threads that require you remove the steering shaft and drain fluids. This was exactly as I wrote it up, clean, simple, step by step. Starter worked great last weekend in the Allagash.

Broke down old starter and it was brushes. Yamaha brush rebuild kit for $40, should give me a back up starter.

Just found out the 4 magnets inside were all touching (not spaced out, as if the glue came off). What would cause it? Picking up a new starter from dennis kirk.

There is no good answer to why this is happening so often. It could be poor adhesion from the factory, prolonged start times, a stuck starter relay or a failed one way starter clutch that kept the starter locked to the engine rpm causing it to overheat. All I know for sure is every time we have an extended deep freeze I see a lot of failed starters and every one of them have broke or slipped magnets.

On Monday I changed a starter on 06 rage.
First triple I had to do.
Found a used one off 15 viper for $125.
Took my hired hand and I about 2.5-3 hours.

magnets had came loose / cracked

Dennis kirk has them new for $130. Or the expensive one for $190. I gotta get this sled done for the weekend. Any way to know if the starter relay is getting stuck? Or if its been changed?

There is an LED kit that shows power to starter for just this reason. If you see it stay on after you start you have an indication your starter relay is engaged and starter will turn at engine rpm. Suggest change the starter relay when you do starter (I changed starter relay, main fuse, yamaha OEM starter, greased and loomed all wires), no issues since. Pics posted on my front end + rebuild thread here... Starter process detailed as well with the engine lift method. Good luck.

Could i use a multi meter and test it at the solenoid? Or where does one get the LED Light?

A starter relay can be tested for operation but even if it checks good that doesn't mean it won't fail or hasn't periodically failed in the past. Anytime a starter is replaced the relay should also be replaced.

I found some old threads on starter issues when I tackled mine and one of them talked about an LED kit you could get (maybe from a member here). Apparently if the starter relay remains engaged so can the starter and actually turns at engine rpm! Short work to spin the magnets off... I would suggest changing the starter relay and adding putting electrical grease (get battery terminal grease packets at Pep Boys) as part of your annual maintenance. This should all but eliminate the stuck relay but the LED was an interesting backup check. If it remains on after the key is turned back to run, you know the relay is stuck and the starter is spinning w the engine.

The only way the starter can turn at engine rpms would be if the one way starter clutch was siezed / stuck.
