Could it be possible that running with a weak battery is causing the stator to fail?

Dealer called me,he replaced the stator and when he went to start it,there was nothing, starter was making a funny noise, turns out my starter is shot also,i Am not impressed now,an additionnal $500 + labour,it will be a $2000 job when all is done,

Dang. I wonder if my stator will be ok. I ran my sled last year on a weak battery that needed to be jumped several times. Hope mine lasts. Maybe I should replace it in the off season with the supposedly better aftermarket one, around $170 I think.

With your sled running, put a voltage meter on your jumper cables from your sled. If you're getting 13.8 -14.4 volts, your stator is charging your battery, and the battery is no good. If low charging voltage, then stator is bad, and needs to be changed.

Thanks thrasher for the advice. My new battery is charging fine and starts in -10F temps just fine. My last battery was a POS Chinese unit. Now have a Yuasa again. So hopefully I will be ok now.

Decided to install a aftermarket starter,$180 instead of $500,the heck with it,its probably the last season for the vector, she should have close to 30 000 km or 18 000 miles,i must say that this sled has been bulletproof up until the 25000 km mark,so i shouldnt complain too much

my sled is ready, finally, they did a very good job, since he had the motor on the bench,he decided to synch the carbs and check the valve clearance at no cost, that is the kind of dealer they are, altogether with tax was $1600 cdn, that's a new stator, new starter, new battery, oil, and all labour,by the way,the valves were spot on,no adjustment needed with 25000 km,my uncle just had his cat 1100 in the shop cuz the valves were all out of spec,7000 km,it cost him $600,i dont feel as bad now

That's yamaha motors for ya! Same with the bikes, no adjustment needed even at 50k miles.

Pat reading through this thread it occurred to me that possibly your starter may have been running with motor running. This could also fry the stator. I would recommend replacing your starter solenoid which is normally the cause of starter running with engine. Rockmiester at yamaheater.com makes a light that warns of the starter running after you let go of key.

All i know is since i replaced the starter and stator,i logged 2000 miles with no issues

Awesome. If it stuck must have worked itself loose.
