Studding an XTX

I am thinking of studding my XTX when it comes in. I would like to stud down the middle just for some extra traction. What stud pattern should I use and how many studs?

I would be interested in others thoughts as well. I had 144 "down the middle" on my 06 SD Gade X. It was a good pattern with great hook-up. But it was a 136... not a 144.

Go to www.woodystraction.com and they have patterns designed just for the XTX.All you have to do is go to the application guide and answer the questions. It's a pretty cool tool,my last three sleds I have done this and followed their patterns and never had any problems.

I second the motion from JcHawk - the last thing you want is your freshly drill track to be out of balance!! Grab one of Woody's templates. It's easy as pie after that. I'd grab one of their holesaw drill bits too for drilling tracks. Makes the whole job 10 times easier. It's $7.00 bucks well spent! IMHO ;)!

Yes, but that patten sucks IMO, they have studs on the outside, studding the outside will kill a track in a hurry. ;):D

You need to plug in the performance catagory not the intermediate catagory on the application guide. This pattern looks alot better and I like the idea of running 171 studs and this pattern does not run any studs on the outside, which IMO is not that big of a deal.

yeah I saw that, but I only want double backers

I ran 114 studs down the centre with double backers on my extended Gade for 2 seasons and over 12,000 miles with lots of off-trail excursions as well and had ZERO problems. I will NEVER use single backers again, no pull-thrus, no bent studs, no twisted backers - it's all good!

I am also studding my 144. ( Someday )
I plan to run 171 up the middle for trail and when on the ice or grass, I'll run the 114 chisels on the outer belts.

This is on a supercharged Attak though. Double backers all the way.

Is 108 enough? I always use '1 stud per horsepower' theory...which would be in the range of 135-138  !!...which would put you in the 144 range.

I dont want alot of studs, just enoughf to stop and start on ice- had a ton in my firecat and it tor up my track pretty bad (singles) so now I think I may buy the firecat 144 template and cut it down the middle on a table saw and glue a strip of abs plastic to widen it to a 15 in track, that way it keeps the studs closer to the rails for better penitration, if anyone see's a problem with that please speak up.
